    FIND ARTICLES IN JOURNALS, NEWSPAPERS, OR DOCUMENTS

    FIRST...do you know the difference between popular and "scholarly" or "peer-reviewed" journal literature?

    TO LOCATE AN ARTICLE, go to Carson library web site and click on "Find an article from a database."

    You may enter and scroll down the A-Z list of all library databases, or select the subject "Sciences."

    When you click on any one of the databases, you will be asked to enter a username and password.  These are the same username and password that you use for entering the campus network (first initial_last name, social or other campus i.d. number).

    Selected databases in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, and Ecology:

  • AccessScience is the online McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology. Don't overlook this excellent resource for articles, images, biographies, and study guides across the sciences.
  • ACS American Chemical Society journals in chemistry.
  • Agricola is a bibliographic database of citations to the agricultural literature created by the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and its cooperators. Covers all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences.  Use Interlibrary loan to request publications and articles. USDA employees have desktop access to full-text journal database.

  • BIOSIS
  •  is the world's largest index of citations and abstracts to literature in the biological sciences. Use Article Linker to search for cited journals in other library databases. Use Interlibrary Loan to receive articles cited in BIOSIS that are not available full-text in any other library database.

  • GeoRef is the world's largest index of citations and abstracts to literature in the geological sciences. Use Article Linker to search for cited journals in other library databases. Use Interlibrary Loan to receive articles cited in GeoRef that are not available full-text in any other library database.
  • JSTOR provides historical information from older journals on biology, ecology, and related topics.
  • MEDLINE  is the NLM's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. Although this is a  citation database, watch for links to full-text. MEDLINE is searchable via the PubMed web site, or via the library database list.
  • Nature Online is the full-text access to Nature magazine from 1997-present.
  • Science Online is the full-text access to Science magazine from 1995-present.
  • ScienceDirect
  •  provides full-text access to over 1,800 science journals from Elsevier Publishing.

  • Wilson Web provides full-text access to journals in the sciences. For Subject Area, select "Applied Science & Technology," "Biological & Agricultural," or "General Science."
  • PubMed Central is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's digital archive of full-text life sciences journal literature. Access via the PubMed Central web site and use Interlibrary loan to receive articles that are not available full-text.
  • Wiley InterScience  provides full-text access to over 300 journals in the sciences from Wiley InterScience Publishing.
  • Two full-text periodical databases that include college-level journals in the sciences are:

  • EBSCO Academic Premier
  • Expanded Academic ASAP.
        After entering the database, select Expanded Academic ASAP from the Gale Group database menu.
        On the menu see also other Gale Group databases for K-12 education, including the Infotrac Kids, Junior, and Student editions.
  • FIND A JOURNAL ARTICLE FOR WHICH YOU ALREADY HAVE A CITATION

  • Go to the library web site and click on  Article Linker  to search for journal titles in multiple periodical databases at once. After locating your journal, click on "Search for Article" to enter the article title, author, volume number, etc. Click on the "Article" link.

  • The University of Nevada Reno Libraries has an extensive list of free electronic journals in the sciences and other disciplines.
  • Many of the journals listed by UNR above are available via various "open source" initiatives:

  • Professional associations often provide access to back-issues of their professional journals. For example, each of the journals below is accessible either through MEDLINE  or directly from the association publisher:

  • The Journal of Nutrition from the American Society for Nutritional Sciences gives free full-text to archived articles prior to one year from current issue, 1997-.
  • Journal of Animal Science from the American Society of Animal Science gives free full-text to archived articles prior to one year from current issue, 1990-.

  • GPO is a searchable database of publications from the U.S. Government Printing Office. In FirstSearch, select GPO and search your topic. Watch for full-text links to government web sites.
  • Visit the official web portal for the State of Montana,  Discovering Montana to search for any Montana government information.

  • See the Montana State Commerce Department's  Census and Economic Information Center for Census data relevant to Montana.  This site is considered one of the best of its kind in the nation.
  • The web portal for all federal government agencies and information is FirstGov.gov 
  • Science.gov is the FirstGov.gov portal specific to federal science agencies and information.

  • HP Learning Center offers free online courses at a variety of levels and applied to business settings on software applications, programming, Web site construction, and networking.
  • Microsoft Education Center provides free online information and tutorials for K-16 educators, administrators, students, and parents.
  • Adobe Online Training
  •  provides selected free sample online tutorials with additional instruction beginning at $49/course.
  • Electric Teacher offers free short tutorials for teachers on FrontPage, Word, PowerPoint, PhotoDraw, and additional links.
  • MacAcademy/WindowsAcademy produces and sells high-quality training CD-ROM's on a wealth of software.
  • ShortCourses bills itself as THE digital photography resource center, with online books on a broad range of digital photography topics.
  • Beginner's Guide to Dreamweaver and Fireworks
  • Atomic Learning offers over 10,000 short technology tutorials via QuickTime video. Selected tutorials are free, and complete access is a subscription fee of $79.99/year. Atomic is a 2005 SIIA Codie Award finalist for "Best Web-Based Instructional Solution".

  • FIND COURSE RESERVES MATERIALS

    Select one of three options for searching and using Course Reserves:

  • Go to the library web site and click on Library Catalog .
  • Click on  Course Reserves  to search for books, videos, or other materials that your instructor has put on reserve for your class.
  • Retrieve reserved materials at the  Circulation Desk .
  • Go to the library web site and click on  E-Res  , then "Electronic Reserves and Course Materials" . Next,  select your instructor's name .
  • The default  password for E-Res  is your instructor's last name in lower case letters. Ask your instructor if there are reserves on E-Res.
  • E-Res articles open in Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available on all campus computers.
  • Go to the library Circulation Desk and ask  for the reserves under the instructor name and course.

  • Go to the library web site and sign up for the  ILLiad  online request and loan service.
  • If off-campus, go to your local college, school, or public library and ask for interlibrary loan assistance.
