Library Media Course Descriptions

 

Courses with C&I in the title are offered through UM-Missoula.  Courses with ED, ENG, or LIB in the title are offered through UM-Western in Dillon:

 

 

 

C&I 480 Curriculum and Instruction: Collection Development (3)

Focus on building and maintaining a foundation print and non-print media collection; devising a selection policy; demonstrating media use in support of the curriculum; and compiling annotated bibliographies.

 

C&I 483 Curriculum and Instruction: Library Media Technical Processes (2)  Focus on acquisition, processing, descriptive cataloging, application of AACR2, and the Dewey Decimal Classification for the print and non print media collections.  As of spring semester 2008, this course will count for 3 credits.  2007: 2 credits 2008: 3 credits

 

C&I 484 Curriculum and Instruction: Administration and Assessment of the Library Media Program (3)

Administrative and management procedures; assessment in terms of state, regional, and national guidelines for library media programs and services.

 

C&I 485 Curriculum and Instruction or Lib 469: Authentic Assessment in Library Media (3) 

Supervised field experience in selected phases of library-media center operations, including assessment. Prerequisite: 22 credits in library-media course work and consent of instructor.

 

C&I 488 Curriculum and Instruction: Libraries and Technology (2)

Uses of computers in automation of library services and in administration of the library media program. 2007: 2 credits; 2008: 3 credits

 

C&I 541 Curriculum and Instruction: Supervision and Teaching of Children's Literature and Critical Reading (3)

Literature based "whole language" study involving extensive critical reading and integrated curricular use of high quality nonfiction and classical, contemporary, and multi cultural fiction, addressed to grades 1 through 8. Prerequisite: undergraduate course in children's literature.

 

C&I 553 Curriculum and Instruction: Information Searching, Retrieval and the Curriculum (3)

Search strategy, informed selection, and curricular utilization of general and subject reference and information sources integration of research and media skills into the K-12 curriculum. Prerequisite: basic course in reference.

 

C&I 572 Curriculum and Instruction: Evaluation of the School Media Program (3)

Study and application of measures used to evaluate school media program and services includes district, state, regional, and national instruments.  Prerequisite: completion of 15 semester credits in the library media program or consent of instructor.

 

ED 360 Children’s Literature (3)

Upon completion of this course students become familiar with the historical background of children’s literature, of authors and illustrators, and of sources for books and related materials.  Study of genre, literary structure, artistic methods and styles, and book format is included.  Extensive reading of literature for pre-school through intermediate school/junior high students is required.  Activities for integrating literature throughout the school curriculum are explored.  Both online and on-campus sections of ED 360 include explanations of technology and Internet resources and integration of film and other visual and dramatic media.  Assessment is competency-based, centered on Montana and national teacher preparation standards.

ENG 360 Young Adult Literature (3)

Upon completion of this course students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with literature appropriate to the needs, interests, and abilities of middle school, junior high, and senior high school students.  They will exhibit competency at locating and appraising a variety of genres from “classics” to the very recent.  Also studied is the historical background of literature for youth, including its relation to the oral tradition and recent popular story forms of television, film, electronic games, and graphic novels.  Authors and illustrators, sources for books, and related materials are investigated.  Literary structure, artistic methods and style, and book formats are compared.  Extensive reading of literature for grades 5 through 12 is required.  Activities for integrating literature throughout the school curriculum are included.  Both online and on-campus sections of ENG 360 include explorations of technology and Internet sources.  Assessment is competency-based, centered on Montana and national teacher preparation standards.

 

LIB 461 Information Literacy and Curriculum (3)
This course will focus on instructional techniques for teaching literacy skills, information retrieval, research, and lifelong learning.  Exploration of how curriculum is designed and how library instruction is integrated into the classroom will be studied.  Collaborative planning, methods of library instruction, and its assessment will be examined.  Students will develop an integrated unit, participate in class discussions, and create a school research process model. 

 

LIB 464 Reference Resources (3)

This class focuses on the evaluation, selection, and use of basic reference resources.  It also contains teaching of media skills, information negotiation, search strategies, database use, and information services.  Instruction will include research, projects, and discussion.  Assessment will be based on participation, written assignments, activities, a major paper or bibliography, or a combination thereof.  Internet only.

 

LIB 469 Library Media Practicum (3)
