| What: | This is a hypertext book, that is, a collection of web pages, to be browsed online, downloaded in part or whole, searched, and used to compare to other Vigilante literature. |
| Aim: | We want to provide in one location, on the web, as much of the Montana Vigilante literature as we possibly can. This will make it easier to compare the various publications, and we hope will shed light on just what happened in the hanging spree of January and Feburary of 1864. It may also clarify the guilt or innocence of some of the participants and/or their victims. |
| Why: | Dimsdale was the first and most succesful of the apologists for the actions of the Vigilantes. Any serious study of the Vigilante literature should include this book. |
| Who: | This hypertext book is part of a joint project the Lucy Carson Library
of University of Montana -- Western and Dr. Louis Schmittroth, retired, louis@cs.athabascau.ca .

| How: | You must have modest skills in using your browser, certainly the use of the BACK and GO buttons on the Netscape menu. Following hypertext links can sometimes create a path that resembles a dish of spaghetti, so I have almost always let you go back to the table of contents (TOC) and start over. At the end of each major section there is a button to go on to the next section, if you are reading sequentially. |
Proceed to the Table of Contents.
