Q: How do I find help for using WEB-based HotDAWG email? A: In addition to the Hotdawg FAQs link on this page, HotDAWG email has some good online help that will assist you with learning more about how the WEB interface works. To access that help follow these steps:
Go to top Q: Will I still be able to use my Z: drive? A:Yes. All student network shared drives (Z:) will continue to be available for data storage during the Spring semester.Go to top Q: How do I get Internet in the Dorms? A: Internet is provided via Ethernet. This means that you must have an Network card (NOT a modem) and Network Cable (NOT a phone cord). Cables can be purchased at the Student Life Office. Network Connection Settings (Windows XP): Right-Click "Local Area Connection". Click "Properties" Double-Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" (Don't uncheck the box next to it) Check "Obtain an IP address automatically". Check "Obtain DNS server address automatically" Under the Advanced button, Be sure that there are no WINS addresses. (Continue with "Internet Explorer Settings" if you still cannot access the Internet) Internet Explorer Settings: go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections (be sure that "Never Use Dial-up" is checked. Click apply and Ok until you get out of the IE Settings. Go to top Q: What does it cost for a campus network connection? A: There are no additional hook-up or monthly fees for use of the ResNet Internet connections in the residential halls. It's Free! However, there maybe some potential costs. These include: Ethernet Cable (Can be purchased from Student Life Office) **NOTE: This is NOT a telephone cord. Go to top Q:How fast is the ResNet connection? A: 10Mbps (M designates millions) where standard dial-up connections are 56Kbps (K is thousands). Performance, however, depends on many other factors including congestion of intranet as well as the Internet. Go to top Q: Do I already have an Ethernet Card? A: An Ethernet card is different than a modem. One difference is that an Ethernet card only has one jack (modems have two side-by-side). Another difference is that the Ethernet jack is slightly larger than a standard phone jack. The other difference is if you look closely at the jack there will be 8 pins (Ethernet) instead of 4 (phone). Go to top Q: Do I already have an Ethernet Cable? A: Most computer systems are not shipped with an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cable is not the same as a phone cable. An Ethernet cable will have a slightly larger plug as compared to a phone cable. It will also have 8 connection pins on the end of it.
Go to top A: If your laptop was purchased after 2000 it probably has an Ethernet card built-in. If it is older than that you should read Do I already have an Ethernet Card? to see if you have one. If you are sure that you don't have one then you will need to purchase a PCMCIA (PC Card) Ethernet Card. These PC cards are about the size of a credit card and should fit in to the side or back of your laptop. They can be purchased from almost any computer vendor. <>
