Victor Star Joins Bulldog Volleyball

Katie McCormick, a 5’7” setter from Victor, Mont., has signed a Frontier Conference/NAIA letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Montana Western according to head coach Katie Howells.

McCormick averaged 3.9 kills, 22 assists, seven digs, five aces and 2.6 blocks per game. She earned all-conference honors and was selected team captain.

“Katie is a great fit for Montana Western volleyball,” said Howells. “Not only is she a great athlete but an outstanding student as well. Katie is a hard worker and will be very dedicated both on the court and in the classroom. I look forward to having her join our program in the fall.”

In addition to volleyball, she also participated in basketball where he earned all-conference honors.

McCormick maintains a 4.0 GPA and was selected to her school’s honor roll and received academic all-state honors for both volleyball and basketball. She will graduate this spring from Victor High School and was selected Salutatorian of her class.

Bulldog Volleyball Signs Dillon Star

University of Montana Western volleyball coach Katie Howells’ first signing of the 2008 recruiting class is a familiar name in Southwest Montana and Bulldog Athletics.

Theresa Bennett, a 5’9 outside hitter from Dillon, Mont., has signed a Frontier Conference/NAIA letter of intent to play volleyball for Montana Western. Bennett transfers from the University of Montana-Missoula. She will be a sophomore in eligibility.

“I am very excited to have Theresa Bennett join the Montana Western Bulldogs,” said Howells. “Theresa is a very smart player who sees the court well and has the ability to put the ball away. We are looking to be a competitive team in the Frontier Conference next fall and Theresa is the kind of player that can help us accomplish that.”

“I am very happy about coming to Western,” said Theresa. “It is a terrific opportunity for me in volleyball and education. It feels like home!”

Bennett’s mother Cindy, father Keith, aunts Billie, Patti, Wilma, uncle Mark and grandfather Bill are all graduates of Western. Cindy and Bill and cousin Dinny are members of the Bulldog Hall of Fame.

“It is really exciting for my whole family,” said Cindy Bennett. “Western has been a big part of family’s life for many years. Teresa wants to be a teacher and there is no better place to go for that then Western.”

Bennett is a 2006 graduate of Beaverhead County High School. She was the 2005 Southwest A volleyball Most Valuable Player.

Bennett was an 11-time letter winner at BCHS in volleyball, tennis, and basketball. She was a three-time Class A all-state selection in volleyball and two-time all-state tennis selection.

Bennett was BCHS's Wendy's High School Heisman award recipient and was honored with the Army's Outstanding Scholar-Athlete award.

From the classroom, she was selected to the honor roll and was a five-time academic all-state selection.

Bennett will major in business education.

 

Bulldog Volleyball Signs Corvallis Star

University of Montana Western head volleyball coach Katie Howells took the next step in her rebuilding process by signing Maria Peterson, a 5-10 setter/right-side hitter from Corvallis, Mont., to a Frontier Conference/NAIA letter of intent.

Peterson transfers from Montana State-Bozeman and will be a sophomore in eligibility. She is a 2006 graduate of Corvallis High School.

“Maria is a great athlete and will help our program as a setter and a hitter,” said Howells. “She wanted the opportunity to go somewhere and help a program rebuild. Maria is going to help Montana Western take another step in the right direction. She will be a key player in our offense.”

In her senior season at Corvallis, Peterson guided the Blue Devils to a fourth place finish at the state tournament and to a 10-4 conference record. She had 313 kills, 212 assists, 82 service aces and 72 blocks. Peterson earned all-conference and all-state honors and was a three-time all-state academic selection.”

“I like the small town atmosphere and the people are so nice.”said Peterson. There are great opportunities both in the classroom and on the court. I am excited because Montana Western is a different kind learning environment. The classrooms are small and not your typical classroom. I'm happy to be a part of the team and a part of the rebuilding process.”
