Eligibility
This page identifies the eligibility requirments that affect student athletes at The University of Montana - Western. For more detailed information about the requirments from the governing agencies click one of the following links:
The University of Montana - Western is a member of the Frontier Conference and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I in Football, Basketball, Volleyball, and Golf. Our Rodeo team is a member of the Big Sky Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
Following are the requirements for eligibility* in Football, Volleyball, Basketball, or Golf for:

Entering Freshman:
- Meet two of three requirements:
- Achieve a minimum score of 18 (ACT) or 860 (SAT). (These tests must have been taken on a national testing date.)
- Achieve a minimum high school grade point average of 2.00 as based on a 4.00 scale.
- Graduate in the top half of your high school class.
- Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 institutionally approved credit hours at the time of your participation and maintain those credits throughout the entire semester of your participation. If you drop below 12 credits at any time during the semester, you will be ineligible to compete.
- You must be in good standing with the institution (Business Office, Residence Halls, Registrar's Office, etc.)

2nd Season Athlete
According to NAIA regulations, in order to participate in a second season:
- You must have officially declared your major to the Registrar's office, prior to certification of eligibility.
- You must have accumulated at least 24 semester credits(not counting repeats) that can be applied towards your degree. (Any May or Summer Term course work of twelve credits or less will be attached to your Spring semester credit total.)
- You must be enrolled in at least 12 institutionally-approved credit hours at the time of your participation, and maintain those credits throughout the entire semester of your participation. If you drop below 12 credits at any time during the semester, you will be ineligible to compete.
- You must be in good standing with the institution (Business Office, Residence halls, Registrar's Office, etc.)
- You must be making significant progress toward obtaining a degree, as determined by The University of Montana - Western registrar.

3rd Season Athlete
According to NAIA regulations, in order to participate in a third season:
- You must have completed at least 48 semester credits (not counting repeats), and be making significant progress toward your major and minor fields of study and the general education requirements for your degree.
- You must have a UM-Western institutional grade point average of 2.00 or better.
- You must have completed a minimum total of 24 semester credits (not counting repeats) during the previous two terms of attendance. (Any May and Summer Term course work of twelve credits or less will be attached to the Spring semester total.)
- You must be in good standing with the institution.
- You must be within your first ten semesters of attendance. A term of attendance is based on enrollment in nine or more institutional credits (summers excluded).
- You must be enrolled in at least 12 institutionally-approved credit hours at the time of your participation, and maintain those credits throughout the entire semester of your participation. If you drop below 12 credits at any time during the semester, you will be ineligible to compete.

4th Season Athlete
According to NAIA regulations, in order to participate in a fourth season:
- You must have accumulated at least 72 semester credits (not counting repeats); 48 of which must apply towards your major and/or minor fields of study, or towards fulfilling your general education requirement.
- You must have UM-Western and cumulative grade point averages of 2.00 or better.
- You must have completed a minimum total of 24 semester credits (not counting repeats) during the previous two terms of attendance. ( Any May and Summer Term course work of twelve credits or less will be attached to the Spring semester total.)
- You must be in good standing with the institution.
- You must be within your first ten semesters of attendance. A term of attendance is based on enrollment in nine or more institutional credits (summers excluded).
- You must be enrolled in at least 12 institutionally-approved credit hours at the time of your participation, and maintain those credits throughout the entire semester of your participation. If you drop below 12 credits at any time during the semester, you will be ineligible to compete.

Redshirt, Readmission, Transfer
According to NAIA regulations, in order to participate, athletes: 1) following a redshirt season, 2) readmission, 3) transferring from another institution must:
- You must have officially declared your major to the Registrar's office, prior to certification of eligibility.
- You must have completed a minimum total of 24 semester credits (not counting repeats and that can be applied towards your degree) during the previous two terms of attendance. (Any May and Summer Term course work of twelve credits or less will be attached to the Spring semester total.)
- You must have UM-Western and cumulative grade point averages of 2.00 or better.
- You must be enrolled in at least 12 institutionally-approved credit hours at the time of your participation, and maintain those credits throughout the entire semester of your participation. If you drop below 12 credits at any time during the semester, you will be ineligible to compete.
- You must be in good standing with the institution.
- You must be making significant progress toward obtaining a degree, as determined by The University of Montana - Western Registrar.

Entering Freshman:
- You are immediately eligible for participation unless you have taken any college courses at High School.
- You must submit an official High School Transcript.
- You must purchase your 1st NIRA card.

2nd Season Athlete
- You must purchase a 2nd NIRA card.
- You must have passed a minimum of 24 semester credits prior to the term of application.
- You must maintain a minimum of 2.0 GPA based upon a 4.0 scale.
- You must have completed 12 semester credits the previous term of attendance or last term competed in NIRA sanctioned rodeos.

- You must purchase 3rd NIRA Card.
- You must have passed a minimum of 48 semester credits prior to term of application.
- You must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA based upon a 4.0 scale.
- You must have completed 12 semester credits previous term of attendance or last term competed in NIRA sanctioned rodeos.
