General Information about English Degrees

Students interested in English have several degree options. Those interested in an integrated and "liberal" degree can pursue the BA degree in Literature and Writing. This degree prepares students for a variety of job opportunities where communication and problem solving are important or for further study at the post-graduate level. More importantly, it encourages students to become engaged with the world around them; it encourages discovery and personal exploration; and it encourages personal expression through writing. A capstone to this multi-disciplinary degree is a senior project or internship, individually designed for each student. Students can elect to take a related area in Creative Writing or Drama. Those interested in pursuing their writing can serve on the campus newspaper or join Twisted Ink, the campus creative writing club.

Those students interested in teaching can pursue the Bachelor's of Science in Secondary Education with a broadfield, major, or minor in English. The broadfield provides additional study in literature, plus extended study in either oral communication or drama. It also requires a minor from another discipline.
