Description

The University of Montana Western invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Residence Life. Reporting to the Director of Residence Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life serves as a member of the Residence Life senior leadership team, and is a 12 month live-in professional who has responsibility for developing and administering a comprehensive residence life program for approximately 350-400 residential students helping to create an environment conducive to the achievement of a student’s academic goals and strives to make a student’s stay on campus stress-free, safe, engaging and fun.

Responsibilities

The position supports the department in the following areas:

Supervision

The Assistant Director of Residence Life supervises 16-18 paraprofessionals (hall directors, resident assistants and summer operations staff) in the following ways:

  • Assisting in the administrative responsibilities of a residence hall, including opening and closing at the beginning of each semester and summer;

  • Planning, developing, and implementing a recruiting, hiring, and training process for residence life staff;

  • Planning and implementing the short and long-term development and growth plan of the student employees;

  • Maintaining on-going evaluation of resident assistants/ workers he/she directly supervises as well as conducting at a minimum one formal semester performance evaluation for each staff member;

  • Taking steps to enhance the personal and professional development of the resident assistant/workers;

  • Creating, implementing, and facilitating all training sessions, in-service meetings, and other developmental meetings for resident assistants/worker staff, in coordination with senior staff;

  • Conducting weekly individual staff meetings with all paraprofessional staff as well as one on one meetings with each paraprofessional in his/her area;

  • Coordinating all aspects of summer conference housing, including but not limited to the scheduling of maintenance, front desk operations, and staff hiring/training to ensure adequate services to summer guests.

Community Development

Facilitates student community building by:

  • Overseeing the development and assessment of co-curricular and extra-curricular programming in the residence halls that enhances the student experience and promotes academic success;

  • Working with Resident Assistants to follow up on programming requirements as well as program effectiveness. Managing the planning and execution of regular and annual programs. (Examples: fall and spring Residence Life campus-wide events and Halloween);

  • Serving as an advisor to committees and/or special project groups as requested (i.e. Student Affairs Team, Conduct Review Team, Student Consultation Team, University Safety Committee, etc.);

  • Working with students to promote positive, inclusive communities;

  • Fostering an atmosphere that promotes a safe and welcoming environment for all housing residents;

  • Meeting with hall staff and other student leaders to address community issues;

  • Meeting with students who have violated the Student Code of Conduct or Residence Hall Policies;

  • Collaborating with other professionals for campus recruitment and retention programs including but not limited to Orientation Program, Paw Prints for Student Success Program, Learning Center, etc.;

  • Attending floor and hall wide programs on a regular basis, as well as eating in the dining hall consistently;

Emergency & Crisis Response

Prepares for emergencies by:

  • Responding to emergency situations within all university housing;

  • Serving on call for a minimum of one week per month;

  • Participating in emergency planning for area supervised and communicating the plan to staff supervised;

  • Serving as a member of the Conduct Review Team;

  • Keeping accurate records and documentation regarding Student Code of Conduct cases through Maxient system and providing senior staff with appropriate student information;

  • Taking an active role in communicating with the Dillon Police Department regarding concerns and student safety issues.

Other Duties as Assigned

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor:     

  • Meeting weekly with senior staff;

  • Helping with Orientation and other Campus activities

  • Other duties as assigned

General Information

The Assistant Director of Residence Life must be able to react quickly and correctly in any crisis situation and often must make independent and immediate judgment calls. He/she must show appropriate judgment in utilizing other campus and community resources if necessary. The Assistant Director’s accountability is essential to the effectiveness of the total program. The position requires the ability to work flexible hours and duties during evenings and weekends, and to work holidays and transitional periods as needed, including the ability to work long hours and consecutive days. There can be no physical limitations that restrict performance during emergency situations or limit mobility throughout the residence halls.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling or a related field;

  • Two or more years of progressively responsible experience in residence life or higher education required;

  • Demonstrated leadership, organization, and management competencies; Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies;

  • Demonstrated competence in public speaking, public relations, and written and oral communications;

  • Demonstrated skills in programming, student advising, conflict mediation, and response to crisis situations;

  • Demonstrated success in creating and managing a work climate of collaboration, collegiality and team work;

  • Ability to promote activities using supervision and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, education or a related field;

  • Experience working with learning communities and special interest housing;

  • Experience advising student groups and serving as a conduct hearing officer;

  • Thorough knowledge of student and human development theories.
