Computer Lab Management Guidelines

Per the Computer Lab Policy 500.4


  1. Computer access will be limited to the UMW or Guest account privileges assigned by ITS.

  2. The STC Computer Systems Technician must be notified of all scheduled lab use (7164).

  3. Scheduling a Computer Lab for classes or events:
    1. Regular block and stringer classes are scheduled through the Registrar’s Office (7371).

    2. For short term events, use the Outlook Calendar event/meeting scheduler, or call 7777 or 7164.

    3. If the event is not a scheduled class through the Registrar’s Office, then the lab must be utilized at all scheduled times. If not, it will be subject to cancellation for the duration of the scheduling.

    4. For non-scheduled use of classrooms, ITS must be contacted before entering the lab.

    5. In case of scheduling conflicts, block and stringer classes have priority.
  4. Software Requirements Beyond Network Configuration:
    1. Installation of needed software must be requested a minimum of one week prior to use.

    2. Software must be fully licensed and pre-approved by ITS (no trial versions for classes). Freeware subject to operational verification by ITS.

Per the Telecommunications Policy 500.5


  1. Report Service Issues

    If experiencing trouble with telephone, voice-mail, or telephone service, contact the ITS Help Desk, STC 101, ext. 7777 and open a trouble ticket.

  2. Telephone Outage

    Telephone outages for essential Montana Western lines will be repaired within 24 hours. Examples include the main switchboard, primary phone in offices where multiple lines are present, etc.

  3. Office Moves

    The State Telephone Technician is on campus every other Friday of each month. ITS requires two weeks prior notice for office moves. Moves will be scheduled for the first available Friday that the Technician is on campus following the request. Telephone adds and changes will also be accommodated on the first available Friday that the Technician is on campus.

  4. Installation, New Connections

    ITS will provide voice and data connections to nearly any location on campus (i.e. excluding many locations in the newly remodeled Main Hall and areas deemed short-term or temporary). There is no charge for installation of new service; however, monthly voice and/or data fees apply.
    If conduit or similar work is required, Facilities Services may charge the department.

  5. Replacement Equipment

    ITS will replace defective telephones, handsets, line cords, and jacks at no cost to the department.

  6. Non-Support by ITS
    1. Peripheral Devices

      ITS will provide line service to fax machines, conference phones, and headsets. However, ITS neither purchases nor supports these devices.

    2. Cellular Phone Service

      ITS does not oversee purchase or service of cell phones.

Per the Wireless Network Policy 500.6


  1. Information Technology Services (ITS) is solely responsible for the security, support and management of the campus network.

  2. ITS is the only entity on campus authorized to deploy wireless access points. Any unauthorized equipment found connected to the campus network will be immediately disconnected.

  3. ITS will treat wireless access as a non-critical, non-priority service, except for devices owned, managed and maintained by the University of Montana Western.

  4. ITS will provide no support of personal wireless devices connected to the network.
