Chancellor's Goals

 

 

 

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR 2007-2008

Below I outline my goals and objectives for my fourth year as chancellor of UM Western.  I will again use the same form and definitions you have used in your own statements. Many goals and objectives remain unchanged because they are ongoing. 

 

GOAL 1.  Continue successful use of the Strategic Plan for UMW. 

 

 

Objectives:

 

·         Continue to underscore the importance and effective use of the plan.

·         Use the plan as the basis  to plan a campaign for UMW with the campus and the Foundation

·         Track achievement and assess accomplishments.

·         Work with the appropriate senior administrators who are responsible for oversight of various goal and objectives.

·         Continually evaluate and update the plan.

·         Hold colleagues and myself accountable to the plan.

 

GOAL 2.  Help ensure the continued success of Experience One and Experiential Leaning. 

 

               

Objectives:

·         Implement appropriate action steps from the strategic plan.

·         Ask all involved to think creatively, both in detail and broadly, to enhance experiential teaching and learning under the plan.

·         Continue to fine-tune the schedule of classes and to assess teaching assignments, courses  and outcomes.

·         Constantly support faculty goals in the classroom.

·         Encourage and support faculty as they explore new ways of experiential teaching and to set high standards in the classroom for themselves and their students.

·         Explore external funding for continued implementation, revision and analysis of Experience One and in support of experiential learning.

·         Explore ways and seek funding  to take advantage of Experience One for travel abroad and international study.

·         Require ongoing, valid assessment of the block plan program.

 

Goal 3. Continue to communicate with and promote Montana Western,  UM, the university system, the Dillon area community and the state. 

 

               

Objectives:

·         Attend as many campus meetings and Dillon area community events as possible.  Continue to be visible on campus and in the region.

·         Walk around campus and speak with colleagues in their offices.

 

·         Meet again with all departments and offices to discuss their challenges and concerns.

·          Host events on campus and at the Chancellor’s house for faculty, staff and community members. 

·         Attend local and MUS meetings and conferences.  .

·         Hold open office hours on campus.

·         Set again, effective communication as an overall goal for senior staff and chancellor’s council. 

·         Constantly remind colleagues and the co0mmunity of our mission to educate students.  

 

 

 

GOAL 4.   Lead Western to greater academic excellence with the advice and counsel of colleagues on campus, residents of the Dillon area community and administrators in Missoula and Helena .

               

Objectives:

·         Challenge the Western community to stretch toward excellence in all departments and programs.

·         Work with faculty, staff and administrators in shared governance.

 

·         Continue to assess, with the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Provost and other appropriate counsel across campus, the appropriate levels of budgetary and staff support allocated to campus offices, departments and programs. 

·         Foster an enhanced intellectual atmosphere on campus and work with the Provost to further enhance the quality of our academic programs.

·         Continue the regular and formalized review of academic programs using external reviewers and outcomes assessments.  

·         Continue to help examine existing and proposed programs for quality and sustainability.

 

·         Continue to require data-driven recommendations, strategic planning and national searches for tenure line and senior administrative positions.  Begin tenure line searches earlier in the academic year.

·         Work with faculty and staff to improve retention and graduation rates.

·         Identify and implement ways to inspire greater student responsibility in making the intellectual pursuit of goals and graduation the primary reason to attend Western.

·         Share and encourage energetic, positive enthusiasm for Western and our mission.

·         Take the long and wide view in making data-informed decisions about the future of Western.  Continue to ask,”What is best for the students?” What is best for UMW in the long haul?  

 

GOAL 5.  Manage and govern Western for maximum efficiency, effectiveness and success.

 

 

                Objectives:

 

 

·         Ensure compliance with external agency  reviews and recommendations.

·         Continue to support meaningful, productive evaluations of all faculty and staff at Western including myself. 

·         Continue to conduct and apply meaningful annual reviews of senior administrators who report directly to me.  

 

·         Follow the institutional outcomes assessment plan. 

·         Support faculty in setting high standards for teaching, service and discovery.

·         Encourage faculty to enrich all academic programs.   

·         Continue to review and analyze the administrative structure at Western.  

·         Help ensure the success of new administrative efforts in student success and admissions.

·         Hold regularly scheduled staff and advisory meetings and encourage members to communicate proceedings with associates and constituents. 

·         Continue assessment of our allocation of human resources for maximum effectiveness and productivity and realign if necessary.  .

·         Work with senior management, staff and faculty to maintain and improve our facilities and campus. 

·         Meet with, and support the goals of, student senate.

·         Continue to encourage enhanced professionalism and customer service as we conduct our business on campus, in Dillon and statewide.  .

·         Encourage the philosophy that educating students requires the joint, coordinated work of all on campus in a collective, respectful effort of faculty, students and staff.

·         Support the goals, objectives and strategic plan of the University of Montana and the MUS. 

·         Continue to support and emphasize Montana Western’s branding and marketing communication initiatives.

GOAL 5.  Actively support and participate in UMW fund raising.

 

                Objectives:

 

·         Work regularly with the UMW foundation to increase giving and foster boarder influence and awareness of excellence at Montana Western. 

·         Continue to work with the Foundation to fulfill the Board’s mission.

·         Begin to develop plans for a capital campaign based on the 2006 strategic plan for action.

·         Continue to explore the possibility of funding for a university-sponsored arts, history and culture week in Dillon during the summer.  

·         Continue to explore fund raising opportunities and partnerships for equine studies facilities, faculty and scholarships in partnership with LaCense and others. 

 

·         Encourage, support and seek funding for all academic programs that articulate a creative vision for future advancement and enrichment. 

 

GOAL 6.    Always serve UM Western and the Dillon area community well, enjoy the challenge, take the wide and long view, remember why we are here, communicate effectively, ask tough questions gently, keep a sense of humor and do what I believe is right for the university.
