Accounts and System AccessThe following page identifies some of the access and use considerations for network accounts on the UM-Western network. If you have any questions about your account or features please contact the ITS office at 683-7411.
Faculty User AccountsAll faculty are provided an account on the UMWESTERN network. This account enables faculty to utilize a number of network services including email, virus protection, sharing list serv messages, accessing extra data storage space, and connectivity to the Internet. These services are supported by the ITS staff and are included in the connection charges each department is assessed.Go to top Student User AccountsITS wants to ensure that all currently enrolled students have access to campus resources. Student accounts are automatically generated each semester from the database of enrolled students. Occasionally, a student will not receive an account or will have difficulty logging on. If this occurs, please contact the ITS staff and a student account will be added.Go to top Go to top Faculty Voice MailAll faculty and staff telephones are equipped with voice mail capabilities for recording incoming calls when you are not able to answer that call. The software for this feature utilizes commands that you can perform from a touch tone phone. The commands enable you todo such things as check for phone messages, record internal, external, and temporary greetings, retrieve messages, change password, and delete messages. Be sure to personalize your voice mail to include your greetings and to modify greetings when you will be away from campus for an extended period of time. Storage space for messages is limited to about 5 minutes per user, so delete messages regularly, or as you listen to them. Voice mail accounts may be accessed by dialing 7077 on campus or 406-683-7077 from any off-campus location. More information about voice mail can be obtained from ITS Telecomm services (7146).Go to top Virus ProtectionAnti-virus (AV) software is mandatory for all machines connecting to the campus network. The currently supported AV software is Norton/Symantec Antivirus and is installed on campus machines as a part of the normal connection charge. This software is updated frequently via the campus network connection. Should a virus manifest itself, the AV software will remove it from the system and notify an ITS staff member about the attack.Go to top Data StorageWhen a user logs onto the campus network at least two windows virtual drives are mapped to his/her computer. These drives are:Z: 25 Mb of personal space on the Windows network server. N: Global UMW information (read only) Further, there is ftp access available at ftp://hotdawg.umwestern.edu/. Instructions for connecting to your personal ftp area are available in either Word or HTML at the above URL. The ftp storage is limited to 20 Mb. Both the Z drives and the ftp area are backed up daily (Monday through Friday) by ITS on a five day rotation. If you experience data corruption on your 'Z:' drive or accidentally delete files from your 'Z:' drive, ITS may be able to restore them. Contact the System Administrator at 7108 if restoration of backed up areas is required. Go to top Internet ConnectivityFaculty and Students may connect to the Internet via campus computers using most of the common browsers (e.g. Netscape or Internet Explorer). ITS is aware of the vast wealth of resources available on the Internet and is dedicated to providing the best connection possible. With a 6Mb connection the campus connection runs substantially faster than a dial-up home connection using a local Internet Service Provider (ISP).Most browsers create a caching area on the machine that keeps track of most frequently visited site graphics and, in some cases, actual home page code. Users need to be sure to find out where this information is saved and periodically remove the unwanted information. This will free up a substantial amount of hard drive space and should be a part of normal computer maintenance. Go to top Faculty and Staff List ServAll faculty are automatically subscribed to the faculty list serv (faculty05@umwestern.edu) This list enables distribution of Email to all faculty members. Other list servs may be requested for departments or other groups. These requests should be made at least a week in advance from the system administrator at 7108. Lists for classes are provided within the courseware system, WebCT.Go to top Banner Student/Faculty WEB-Based Services (Dawgs)The UMW Web for Students/Faculty are on-line services designed to provide access to UM-Western's Student Information System. Through this interface, students can register, add or drop classes, update personal information, review grades, financial aid, and account information. Faculty members have access to class rosters and advisee schedules. Faculty can also input grades for their classes via this interface. The process for accessing the system via the Internet is easy. The URL for Banner Web for Student/Faculty is http://dawgs.umwestern.edu . Up-to-date class schedule information can be found by clicking on the 'Class Schedule' link on the opening page. That link also provides information on course times, CRN numbers and descriptions. To check out the additional information specific to you, select 'Log on to Secure area'. You'll be asked to enter your user ID number and your PIN. Once into the application, if you enter invalid data, the system alerts you to the error and prompts you for the correct information. After you make changes, you must select 'Submit Changes'. If you log out before Submitting Changes, your changes will be cancelled. More information about Dawgs is available from the registrar's office (7371)
