Eastern Oregon overwhelms Montana Western

The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers scored early and often on Saturday afternoon and rolled over the University of Montana Western 54-13 in the final Bulldog home football game of the season. It was also a time to honor the Bulldog seniors playing their final game at Vigilante Field. Chris Ware passed for three touchdowns in the opening quarter; to Kelvin Sampson (4 yards), Gary Cole (14 yards) and to A.C. Songco (34 yards). Nick Magrone scored a fourth touchdown when he intercepted a Jeff Logan pass and ran it back for a 41 yard score. The second quarter opened with Sampson running 76 yards for a touchdown. Ware threw two more touchdown passes, the first one to Dillon Bedford for 13 yards and Sean Hurlbut snagged a 27-yard pass for the second touchdown. Halftime ended with the Mountaineers on top 47-0. Matt Orthmann rushed for a four-yard touchdown to push the score to 54-0 in the middle of the third quarter. Montana Western closed out the scoring on a Logan to TJ Leep pass of two yards and Charlie Dotson caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Logan to close out the scoring. The Mountaineers rolled up 547 yards of total offense, 314 rushing and 233 passing. The Bulldogs were held to 198 yards of total offense, just 64 rushing and 134 passing. Sampson rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown and Hurlbut added 82 yards for Eastern Oregon. Dotson topped the Bulldogs with 67 yards rushing. Ware passed for 201 yards and five touchdowns for EOU. Logan had two touchdown passes and 134 yards passing for Montana Western. Kasey Griffiths led the Bulldog defense with 12 tackles, five unassisted. Howard McDonald was the Mountaineers leading tackler with six, five unassisted. Eastern Oregon improved to 7-2 in conference play and 7-3 overall. Montana Western fell to 2-7 in the conference and 2-8 overall. The Bulldogs play their final game of the season on Nov. 12 in Butte, Mont. against the Montana Tech Orediggers. The Bulldogs defeated the Orediggers 55-16 in Dillon on Oct. 1 in their first meeting of the year.
