The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced Tuesday that 259 football student-athletes have been named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, including the University of Montana Western’s Jesse McCloud and Torrey Vezina.
In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
McCloud, a junior defensive back from Manhattan, Mont., ended the season for Montana Western as one of the Bulldogs’ top defensive players. McCloud led the team in interceptions with seven and is tied for second in total number of tackles this season with 62 (41 of which were unassisted).
Vezina, a Dillon, Mont. native, is also a junior defensive back for the Bulldogs. Vezina had 12 total tackles in the five games he played this year for Montana Western. In 2011, Vezina had a total of 23 tackles and also averaged five yards per game on receptions.
The University of Montana Western has launched a national search for the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs position.
