The University of Montana Western men’s basketball team traveled to Billings, Mont. on Saturday, Dec. 29 and took on the University of Calgary. The Bulldogs and Dinos met for the third time this season and the Bulldogs remained victorious with an 85-82 win.
A field goal made by Jordan Overstreet at the 13:15 mark put Montana Western up for good in the first half. The Bulldogs would lead by as much as 14 points before taking a 41-29 lead at halftime.
Montana Western would continue their comfortable lead in the second half until the Dinos made a three-pointer with 3:49 remaining, getting within eight points. The Bulldogs missed the front half of a bonus free throw and the Dinos connected on another three to make it 77-82. Maazin Butler sank two free throws for Montana Western before Calgary made back-to-back baskets, a three-pointer and field goal to get within two points. Butler made one of two free throws and the Dinos’ last second three-pointer missed the mark for the final score of 85-82.
Butler led the Bulldogs with 21 points followed by Vince Turk with 16, Tyler Miller with 14 and Jordan Overstreet with 13.
Kris Castro put up eight points to go along with his game-high eight rebounds. Kris Collins and Gabe Rucker each dished five assists and Collins picked up three steals.
The Bulldogs shot 50 percent (30-60) from the field, 38 percent (9-24) behind the arc and 73 percent (16-22) from the free throw line.
The start of the New Year brings conference play to Montana Western. On Thursday, Jan. 3 the Bulldogs travel to Butte for the Digger-Dawg matchup at 7:30 p.m. Then it is the long haul to Lewiston, Idaho on Saturday, Jan. 5 to take on Lewis-Clark State College at 7:30 p.m.
