Four UMW student-athletes make scholars list

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced that 124 Division I women's basketball student-athletes were named 2012-13 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. The list included three of Montana Western’s women’s basketball players, Sammi Bignell, Brittney Leibenguth and Kassi Kerbs. Montana Western men’s basketball player Tyler Miller also made the list.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must achieve junior academic status.

Sammi Bignell, a junior from Helena, Mont., led the UMW Bulldogs this season by scoring 482 total points this year, which included a season-high 34-point performance against Great Falls in January. Bignell also lead the team in rebounding with 201 and grabbed 40 steals this season for the Bulldogs.

Brittney Leibenguth, a senior from Missoula Mont., ended her senior season scoring 236 points for the Bulldogs and had a career-high 14 points against Dickinson State. Leibenguth grabbed 96 rebounds and 24 steals this year.

Kassi Kerbs, a senior fro Burley, Idaho, ended this season scoring 151 total points and had the best free throw percentage on the team with 85 percent. Kerbs also chipped in with 24 steals and 59 rebounds. Kerbs scored a career-high 15 points on two different occasions, once against the University of Lethbridge and again against Warner Pacific in November 2012.

Tyler Miller, a junior from Chandler, Ariz., scored a total of 316 points this season for the Bulldogs. He had a career-high 23 points against Carroll College in February and most recently he scored 22 points at the NAIA national tournament to help the Bulldogs win and advance to the NAIA Sweet 16. Miller also grabbed 150 rebounds and had 42 steals on the year.
