The University of Montana Western men’s basketball team looks to improve on their 7-5 record as they host Montana Tech (7-5 overall; 0-1 conference) on Thursday Jan. 2 and Lewis-Clark (12-3 overall; 1-1 conference) on Friday Jan. 3.
The Bulldog men are coming off a win in their second game in the Hampton Inn Classic Tournament in Billings this past weekend. They opened the tournament with a loss to Mid America Nazarene University on Friday and then came back with a big win versus familiar foe Lethbridge University. The UMW men lost the first matchup of the season versus the Pronghorns but have come back and won the next two. The final game was a 20 point win for the Bulldogs.
Montana Tech is currently 0-1 in the Frontier Conference and have scored 60 points in their one Frontier game while giving up 105 points to Lewis-Clark State College. Overall Tech is scoring 77 points a game while surrendering 75 points a game. They are led by Adam Greger’s 19 points per contest. The Orediggers are led in both rebounds and assists by Bryan Bock who is averaging 6.5 rebounds and 5.33 assists per game respectfully. Montana Tech is coming off of a 96-90 win versus Northwest Indian College.
On Friday the UMW men take on Lewis-Clark State College who are 1-1 in Frontier Conference play so far this season. The Warriors are led by conference scoring leader E.J. Farris’ 22 points a game. Lewis-Clark ranks first in the conference in 3-point field goals made and are second in the Frontier Conference making 43% of their 3-point field goals attempted. Robert Ellis leads the team in assists with 4.57 per game.
The Bulldogs have three players averaging in double figures led by Jake Owsley (14.83), Maazin Butler (14.58), and Jordan Overstreet (12.33). They are led by Owsley’s 6.50 rebounds a game followed closely by Kris Castro’s 6.17 boards. Castro also leads the team in steals averaging just over two a contest. The man in the middle for the Bulldogs, Jake Owsley, has recorded three double-doubles this season.
