Montana Western recognizes winter sport senior student-athletes

Saturday evening at Straugh Gymnasium the Montana Western women’s and men’s basketball teams hosted Great falls. In addition to the games the fans who attended were also part of the Pink Zone game and senior night. In between the games eight senior student-athletes from Montana Western were recognized before the crowd and congratulated by their respective head coach, Chancellor Dr. Richard Storey, and Athletic Director Ryan Nourse.

The seniors were:

Sammi Bignell:

Sammi-SrSammi is a guard from Avon, Montana and a graduate of Helena Capital High School. Following the 2010-11 season she was selected as the Frontier Conference Freshman of the year. She has been a two time selection to the all-conference team and was honorable mention All-American following the 2012-13 season.

Sammi has played in 111 career games as a Bulldog. Some of her accomplishments at Montana Western include ranking sixth on the UMW all-time list scoring 34 points in a game, ranks 8th with 482 points in a season, and is in the top ten all-time in season scoring average. Over her career she has scored more than 1600 points and grabbed 615 rebounds.

She will graduate in the fall of 2014 with a degree in elementary education.

Roxanne Thurman:

Roxy-SrRoxanne is a guard from Bigfork, Montana and a graduate of Bigfork High School. Roxy has played in 100 games over her career as a Bulldog. She is tied for fifth on the all-time records when she had 6 steals in a game. She has accomplished this feat twice in her career. During the 2012-13 season she averaged 2.0 steals a game and ranks 6th all-time with 64 steals in a season. Roxy ranks 7th all-time with more than 148 career steals. She has scored more than 800 points and has over 400 rebounds as a Bulldog.

She will graduate in the spring of 2014 with a degree in business administration with an option in Health and Fitness Management.

Taeler Rodriguez:

Taeler-SrTaeler is a Montana Western cheerleader from Manhattan, Montana and a graduate of Manhattan High School. Taeler has been a member of the cheerleading squad for two years. She has been on the Dean’s list four consecutive years and a member of the National Honors Society for one year.

Taeler will graduate in the spring of 2014 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in sociology.

Vince Turk:

Turk-SrVince is a center from Whitehall, Montana and a graduate of Whitehall High School. Vince was a member of the Bulldog’s 2013 elite eight team as well as the sweet sixteen team in 2012. He has played in 56 games for Montana Western. He has recorded more than 170 rebounds for an average of more than three a game. He scored a career high 19 points in the NAIA tournament game versus Southwestern Assemblies of God University on March 16, 2013.

He will graduate with a degree in Elementary Education with a coaching option.

Gabe Rucker:

Gabe-SrGabe is a guard from Bozeman, Montana and a graduate of Bozeman High School. He has been a member of three NAIA national tournament teams including the 2013 elite eight team. Gabe will go down as one of the winningest players in Montana Western basketball history. He has played in 117 games in a Bulldog uniform. Gabe is a career 79 percent free throw shooter and has averaged nearly 2 assists a game over his career.

He will graduate in the spring of 2015 with a degree in biology and an integrative biology option.

Maazin Butler:

Maaz-SrMaazin is a guard from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Fife High School in Tacoma, Washington. He was selected as an honorable mention all-conference selection following the 2012-13 season. Maazin was a member of the 2013 NAIA Elite Eight team at the national tournament in Kansas City. He has played in 58 games for the Bulldogs and has scored 767 points in his two seasons at Montana Western. He is averaging nearly 15 points a game this season and has recorded 17 or more points in 12 games.

He will graduate in the fall of 2014 with a degree in Business Administration and an option in Small Business Management.

Tyler Miller:

Tyler-SrTyler is a forward from Chandler, Arizona and a graduate of Basha High School. Tyler has been a part of three UMW national tournament teams, highlighted by the elite eight appearance in the 2012-13 season. During his Bulldog career he has scored more than 730 points, and has over 370 rebounds. He scored a career high 23 points on February 16, 2013 versus Carroll College. He is a career 38 percent three-point shooter.

He has been an academic All-American for two years and has a 3.77 cumulative GPA. Tyler will graduate in the spring of 2014 with a degree in Business Administration with a digital media and design option.

Jake Owsley:

Jake-SrJake is a forward from Bozeman, Montana and a graduate of Bozeman High School. He has been selected to the first team Frontier conference all-conference team as well as a second team All-American.   Jake has played in 82 games as a Bulldog. He has scored 829 points and has a career field goal percentage of 53 percent. He has grabbed more than 530 rebounds during his career and is averaging 14.3 points a game this season.

Jake will graduate in 2015 with a degree in Health and Human Performance.
