Bulldogs wrap camp with scrimmage Friday

The University of Montana Western football players reported to campus and football pre-season practice on Aug. 2. The team hit the field Aug 4, and after nearly two weeks the 2014 two-a-day practices will come to a close on Friday when the Bulldogs take to Vigilante field for a scrimmage and a final tune-up before their season opener.

For the past two weeks the Bulldogs have practiced and met daily for the annual football pre-season camp.

The scrimmage on Aug. 2 starts at 6 p.m. at Vigilante Field. Friday will mark the end of this year’s pre-season practices and will give the coaches a final look at their squad before heading into the first game week of the season.

“Looking forward to Bulldog nation getting a sneak peak of the 83rd team in Montana Western football history at this Friday night's scrimmage,” said head coach BJ Robertson. “I believe it will be easy for fans to see the work and commitment our guys have put in since last November. I am very proud of the position these guys have put themselves in going into the 2014 season.”

The Bulldog offense is under new leadership with Bruce Carpenter joining the staff in the spring. He will lead an offense that returns two all-conference performers in junior offensive lineman Will Thacker and sophomore running back Sam Rutherford who both earned second team honors. The offense also returns junior running back from Laurel, Mont., Dylan Kramer, Helena product and senior quarterback Tyler Hulse, senior half back Tony Wilson, and a host of other Bulldogs looking to make an impact in the Frontier conference.

The defense is led by senior Jesse McCloud who will be patrolling the secondary from his free safety position. He has been a two time all-conference performer during his career thus far and looks to build on his first team all-conference honors from a year ago. He is joined by fellow all-conference performer Phil Selin. The Great Falls, Mont. native earned second team all-conference recognition at his defensive line position. The UMW defense also returns junior linebackers and Helena natives AJ Wilson and Joe Coker, Billings junior Ben Sulser, and Libby native TJ Benson. Some newcomers to look for are defensive back and Missoula product Jay Owens, and Idaho natives Garrett Buck and Tyrell Penner.

Montana Western opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 23. at Vigilante Field when they will take the field and take on Montana Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
