Montana Western Volleyball goes 3-2 in opening tournament

The University of Montana Western volleyball team returned from its season opening tournament in Spokane, Wash., winning three games and dropping two. The Bulldogs swept all three matches in their victories and lost two matches by scores of 1-3.
UMW opened the 2014 season with a match versus Evergreen State College and were handed a loss by a score of 1-3. Emily Erickson and Breanne Kelley had 11 and 10 kills during the match, while Paige Latimer had 38 assists. Kendra Mendicino contributed 17 digs. In their next match the Bulldogs came out and beat Simpson in straight games. The first two games were won with scores of 25-21, while the third game was taken with a 25-17 score.
On Friday the team took to the court for two more matches and swept both. The Bulldogs beat Walla Walla in the morning and then swept Northwest with scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-19. Emily Erickson led the team with 16 kills during the second match, while Mendicino and Latimer had 16 and 14 digs. In addition to her defensive efforts, Latimer added 32 assists on the afternoon. The Bulldogs wrapped the tournament up with a 1-3 defeat to Eastern Oregon.
Montana Western will have this week off and will return to the court in Hastings, Neb., for a four game tournament. The Hastings tournament will begin Sept. 5 when the Bulldogs open with two matches on Friday and then wrap the tournament with two matches on Saturday.
