The University of Montana Western rodeo team will compete in the second rodeo of the spring in Helena on Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18 at the Lewis and Clark County Fair Grounds. By Wally Feldt
The University of Montana Western rodeo team competes in their second spring rodeo Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18 at the Lewis and Clark County Fair Grounds in Helena, Mont.
Evening performances are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and a slack performance Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Montana Western mens' team is ranked first in the Big Sky Region and 7th in the nation. Montana Western's Wyatt Smith leads the region in all-around competition and team-mate Willie Burns is fourth. Smith is second in tie down roping, first in saddle bronc riding and steer wrestling, and fourth in team roping, heeler. Stetson Wilson, Montana Western senior, is second in the region in steer wrestling while Brett Heggie is tops in tie down roping.
The Montana Western womens' team is third in the region. Montana Western's Brandy Pedersen is fifth in the region in barrel racing and team-mate Rose Fields is second in breakaway roping. Shaylee French is fourth in the region in goat tying.
Montana Western has high hope for their four remaining rodeos this season, the Bulldogs looks to qualify both teams for the College Nationals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyo. June 14-20. The top two teams in the mens' and womens' regional standings qualify for the CNFR.
