The Bulldog men's and women's basketball teams captured Frontier Conference wins over Montana Tech on the Orediggers' home court on Saturday. By Wally Feldt The University of Montana Western Bulldogs outscored the Montana Tech Orediggers 38-21 in the second half on the way to a 69-55 women's Frontier Conference basketball victory. It was the Bulldogs' third straight victory, all of which have been on the road. The Bulldogs shot only 39 percent from the field and trailed 31-34 after the first half. In the second half, the Bulldogs turned up the heat on their offense and defense. With Tech leading 47-39, a Heather Brooks 3-point basket began a 17-2 Bulldog run. The Bulldog defense held Montana Tech scoreless for seven and a half minutes. The Bulldogs pounded the ball inside and outscored Montana Tech 34-16 in the paint. Montana Western also out-rebounded the Orediggers 45-33. Three Bulldogs scored in double figures led by Kristen Luedtke and Chloe Mosey with 13 each and Stephanie Dana with 11. Rheanna Padden led the Bulldogs in rebounds with eight followed by Dana with seven. Montana Western is now 3-4 in conference games and 7-13 overall. The Bulldogs host Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College on Feb. 5 and 6. The Bulldog men's team made it a Montana Western clean sweep over the Orediggers with an exciting 86-77 victory. Montana Western jumped out to a 20-4 lead and looked to be on their way to a rout over the Orediggers. However, with Montana Western leading 27-12, the Orediggers went on a 13-0 run to cut the Bulldog lead to 27-25. Montana Western held off the Oredigger surge and led 38-31 at the break. Montana Tech opened the second half with a 10-2 run and took their first lead at 41-42. Brandon Brown hit two free throws for the Bulldogs to give them a 49-47 lead, which they would not lose again. The Bulldogs put the game out of Tech's reach with a 13-2 run. JaRon Brown and Brandon Brown led the Bulldogs with 20 points each followed by Layne Glaus and Terry Hauser with 12 points each. JaRon Brown also led the team in rebounding with nine rebounds. Montana Western closes the first half of the conference season with a 5-2 league record and are 16-6 overall. The Bulldogs host Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College on Feb. 5 and 6.
