By Wally Feldt The University of Montana Western Rodeo team travels to Helena, Mont. for the Big Sky Region rodeo on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 16 at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds. The evening performances are 7 p.m. each night and a slack performance takes place on Saturday morning at 9. The Bulldog men took first and fifth at the first two rodeos of the spring season and increased their overall team lead to 594 points over second place Montana State University (MSU). Wyatt Smith only scored points in one event but maintains a slim 11 point lead in the all-around standings. Smith did not score points in saddle bronc riding but maintained his lead in the regional saddle bronc standings. The Montana Western women’s team lost ground to first place MSU. The Bulldogs now trail the MSU women by 655 points in the overall team standings. Bailee Thompson is in second in the region in all-around, barrel racing and goat tying. On the strength of her first-place showing at the second MSU rodeo, Megan Crist moved to third in the region in goat tying. The top two men’s and women’s teams in the Big Sky Region automatically qualify for the College Nationals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming June 13-19, 2010.
