UMW equestrian members advance to national finals

Three members of the University of Montana Western equestrian team competed at the National Western Semi-finals in Findlay, Ohio from March 26 to 27, 2011. By Kaitlin Ens Three members of the University of Montana Western equestrian team competed at the National Western Semi-finals in Findlay, Ohio from March 26 to 27, 2011. The Montana Western competitors were up against powerhouse schools such as Stanford University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Connecticut. Of the three Montana Western competitors, two moved on to the National Western Finals in Lexington, Ky. in May. Jenny Winfield, a human health and performance major and the Montana Western equestrian team’s assistant coach, will be attending the national Western finals at the Kentucky Horse Park along along with George Lawson, a natural horsemanship major. Members of the Montana Western English team are currently traveling to Los Angeles, Calif. for the national English semi-finals. In other equestrian news, the regional meeting for the University of Montana Western’s equestrian team occurred on March 4, 2011. New rules and show schedules were discussed for the upcoming competitive season. The 2011/2012 show season is set with the possibility of a few minor date changes in the future. On Oct. 1 and 2, 2011, the University of Montana Western will host two English shows and one western show. On either Oct. 8 and 9 or Oct. 15 and 16, 2011, The College of Southern Idaho will host three western shows. On Nov. 5 and 6, 2011, The University of Montana will host three English shows. On Dec. 3 and 4, 2011, Montana State University will host two western shows and one English show. On Feb. 4 and 5, 2012, Utah State University will host one western and two English shows. On Feb. 18 and 19, 2012, Rocky Mountain College will host three western shows including the Western Regional Finals. On March 10 and 11, 2012, Utah State University will host two English shows including the English regional finals. The English regionals are set as a rotating show and will be hosted by a willing institution. The University of Montana requested to host the event for 2013.  A new competitor, the University of Saskatchewan, based out of Saskatoon, Canada, also joined the region. The teams also decided the fall 2011 regional meeting will be held at the University of Montana Western. Elections were also held at the meeting and University of Montana student and equestrian team member Elena Ruddy was nominated and accepted as the new regional president.
