By Lowell Peterson University of Montana Western head men’s basketball coach Steve Keller announced the signing of Archbishop Murphy High School's Zach Smith to a Frontier Conference/NAIA letter of intent. “We are excited Zach decided to attend the University of Montana Western,” Keller said. “As a 6’4” shooting guard, Zach was the leading three-point shooter in the history of his high school. We look forward to watching him develop into a very good player in the Frontier Conference.” Smith played for two years at Archbishop Murphy in Monroe, Wash. under coach Greg Turcott, son of former Carroll College basketball coach Gary Turcott. Smith averaged 15 points and six rebounds per game during his senior year while making 80 percent of his free throws. An excellent outside shooter, Smith finished his high school career at Archbishop Murphy with school records in successful three-point shots in a game (seven), in a season (52) and in a career (126). Smith was second team all-conference as a junior and honorable mention all-conference as a senior in addition to being a team captain. Academically, Smith was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with a 3.4 grade point average. Smith is the son of Silas and Yvonne Smith and plans to major in physical therapy and psychology at Montana Western.
