Montana Western wrestlers place second at 2015 NCWA national tournament

The University of Montana Western wrestling team placed second among all 67 Division II teams at the 2015 NCWA national championship tournament held at Allen, Texas, over the weekend. 

Montana Western finished the national tournament with two All-Americans, one national champion and a team score 59.5.

Ruger Piva, a freshman from Challis, Idaho, claimed the national championship in the 165-pound weight class. He beat Penn State Mont Alto’s Clay Kocsis 4-3. UMW’s John Wiley, a sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., claimed the third place trophy in the 184-pound weight class with a win over Liberty University’s Keyshaun Ward by a score of 5-3. Both wrestlers earned All-American status for their efforts.

The eleven UMW wrestlers who traveled to the national competition had 18 wins and 14 losses overall.  Over 470 wrestlers and 80 plus teams competed in the three-day tournament, which is hailed as the largest college wrestling tournament in the nation.
