Helena

downtown HelenaFour Confederate ex-soldiers found "color" in their gold pans in the draw called Last Chance Gulch.  The rush was on and by 1887 Helena had grown to a town of 4,000 inhabitants.  The city transformed from a rough and tumble gold camp to trade center, capital city and finally into Montana's center for culture and the arts.  From the elegant State Capitol and grand historic mansions that grace beautiful old neighborhoods to the stone and wooden shacks in Reeder's Alley, from fine museums, art centers, galleries and theatres to the fairgrounds and golf courses, Helena is truly the Queen City of the Rockies.
