Virginia City
Virginia City was the first town incorporated in Montana (1864) and is also the site of Montana's oldest newspaper, the Madisonian, which was started in 1873 and continues to operate weekly. Gold was discovered here in May, 1863 and by the following fall the population had jumped to about 18,000. Now a registered 'historic landmark', this picturesque, sleepy town sits along State Highway 287, about 70 miles SW of Bozeman and 70 miles SE of Butte.
