MONTANA GEOLOGY (geology 130)
Students study basic geological concepts in the context of the geologic history of the state. It is hands-on geology -- every class has a lab component and there are several field trips. Students write a research paper designed for presentation to the general public and do readings at the campus coffee house and for the radio. Next year, this class will evolve to:
GEOLOGY OF THE AMERICAN WEST (geology 230)
Study the geologic evolution of the West, from its most ancient beginnings to the modern processes that are still shaping it. Read accounts of the landscape by Native Americans, early European explorers, and modern writers. Practice field and lab techniques for hand-sample identification of rocks and minerals. Use maps and field observations to recognize geologic formations and structures, and observe and describe some of the geomorphic processes common in the West today. Students successfully completing this course will have a basic understanding of the development of the main features of the Western landscape, including its rocks, mountains, valleys, rivers, deserts and plains. Includes afternoon and/or weekend field trips and possibly a Spring Break field trip to one of the West's National Parks. Preq: GEOL 101 or 150.
