| The Rock Garden! | ||
| Jaycee Park in Dillon has a new educational rock garden, built by
Dr. Sheila Roberts and students in Geology 226 -- Rocks, Minerals, and
Resources. Southwest Montana is one of the best places on the planet to
study geology and we wanted to share that with the people of the region.
The region has rocks from nearly every geologic time period, from middle
Archean metamorphic rocks to Quaternary glacial sediments. The tectonic
history covers the earliest assembly of continents to recent extension
related to passage of the Yellowstone Hot Spot. The eleven rocks in the
new park record a sampling of that story. Every Geology 226 class will add
to the garden. This project was partially funded by a grant from The Montana Campus Compact and received a lot of support from the community for hauling rocks, landscaping, and putting on the opening party. Academic service-learning is an integral part of many classes in the Environmental Science Department. We get out of the classroom! | ||
