Garnets! Chad studying soils

Soils and Paleosols was the topic of this year's SENIOR SEMINAR (geol 409). Students in the class picked research topics ranging from assessment of modern and ancient soil fertility to climatic interpretations of rock varnish. Sherrie Landon, one of the seminar students, is now incorporating a study of paleosols into her SENIOR THESIS project on Tertiary sedimentary rocks in the beautiful Ruby Basin, east of Dillon (occasional layers of red garnets highlight these rocks). Chad Williams, another student, is completing a SENIOR THESIS project in modern soil geochemistry, studying a transect in the Bighole Basin west of Dillon (a well-known blue ribbon fishing area).
