Smith will be the featured speaker at the University of Montana Western On the Rocks speaker series on Monday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. Smith recently published “Where Elk Roam: Conservation and Biopolitics of Our National Elk Herd,” a book detailing his work with the National Elk Herd during his 22-year tenure as the National Elk Refuge biologist in Jackson Hole, Wyo. According to Smith’s website, the narrative of the book “centers on the winter feeding program [of the National Elk Herd], designed to sustain more elk than the winter range can support, and the consequences to habitat, biodiversity, and the health of the elk from crowding thousands of animals on feedgrounds each winter.” Smith’s talk will take place in Block Hall Room 311 on the Montana Western campus. On the Rocks presentations are free and open to the public.
