Montana Lt. Gov. Angela McLean and former University of Montana football coach Mick Delaney will be featured at this year’s University of Montana Western commencement.
McLean will give the commencement address, and Delaney will be honored as the 2015 Distinguished Alum. Both are Montana Western alumni.
“Montana Western helped to set me on a path toward a 20 year career in the classroom, educating Montana’s next generation, and ultimately toward serving as Montana’s lieutenant governor,” McLean said. “I’m thrilled to return to my alma mater, to join the class of 2015 as they begin their successful career paths,” McLean said.
McLean graduated from Western Montana College of the University of Montana Western (now Montana Western) with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education in 1994. McLean went on to earn a Master of Arts in education, curriculum and instruction from the University of Montana in 2000.
After teaching American and Montana history, American government, geography and current events in the Arlee Public Schools from 1994 to 1997, she became a teacher at Anaconda High School.
In 2006, Gov. Brian Schweitzer appointed McLean to the Montana Board of Public Education where she served as vice-chair. In February 2010, Schweitzer appointed McLean to the Montana Board of Regents and she was appointed the chair of that board in January 2012. In February 2014, Gov. Steve Bullock appointed her as Montana’s 31st lieutenant governor.
McLean was awarded the University of Montana Western Distinguished Alumni award in 2009.
Delaney graduated from Western Montana College (now the University of Montana Western) in 1964 with his bachelor’s degree in education. While attending college, he played on the undefeated 1963 football team, which was inducted into Montana Western’s Hall of Fame in 2014.
Delaney began his coaching career in his hometown of Butte, Mont. He coached wrestling and football at Butte Central High School from 1964-67. During that time he also taught English.
Delaney served as head wrestling coach and assistant football coach at the University of Montana from 1968-69. From 1978-81, he coached football at Montana State University. Delaney served as athletic director for Montana Tech in Butte from 1983-85. In 1991, Delaney returned to his alma mater to serve as the head football coach and athletic director for two seasons at Western Montana College before taking a position coaching running backs at Colorado State.
In 2008, former UM head coach Bobby Hauck hired Delaney to be the associate head coach and running backs coach. When Robin Pflugrad took over for Hauck in 2010, Delaney stayed on as a coach as the lone holdover from Hauck’s staff. In 2012, Delaney was named head coach of the Montana Grizzlies.
Delaney announced his retirement from the Grizzlies in the fall of 2014.
Montana Western commencement is May 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Straugh Gymnasium in the Bulldog Athletic and Recreation Center (BARC) on the UMW campus.
