UMW News BureauThe Bulldog men's basketball team split over the weekend with Dickinson State University, winning on Friday, 89-66, and losing on Saturday, 64-81. By Lowell Peterson The University of Montana Western's Brandon Brown (35) and Cedric Clarington (15) combined to score 50 points as the Bulldogs defeated Dickinson State for the second time this season, 75-71. The Bulldogs previously defeated the Blue Hawks on Oct. 29 in Dillon, 89-66. The Bulldogs outscored DSU by two points in each half to come away with the victory in the hard-fought contest. In addition to their scoring exploits, Brown had five assists and Clarington recorded four steals and four rebounds. Jake Owsley, recovering from a knee injury and seeing his first action in almost a month, matched Clarington with four rebounds. Four players scored in double figures for the Blue Hawks. Casper Hesseldal had a game-high 24 points, Matthew Lee added 16, Tevin Hurd had 14 and Robbie Morey scored 11. Lee and Hesseldal each grabbed 10 rebounds to finish the night with double-doubles. Ryan Kittleson was the assist leader with four. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 on the season while Dickinson State fell to 4-6. On Saturday, the third time was definitely not the charm for the Bulldogs and the adage that it is tough to beat a team three times in the same season also proved to be true. After losing games in their first two meetings this year, Dickinson State defeated the University of Montana Western on their home court Saturday night, 81-64. The Blue Hawks were as hot as the Bulldogs were cold. Dickinson shot .536 (30-56) from the field overall and .458 (11-24) from beyond the three-point arc. Montana Western was just .371 (23-62) from the field and .240 (6-25) on three point attempts. The only place the Bulldogs had the advantage was at the free throw line, going .667 (12-18) to the Blue Hawks .556 (10-18). Once again the Bulldogs were led in scoring by Brandon Brown and Cedric Clarington. Brown finished with 19 points and Clarington had 17 but the rest of the team accounted for just 28 points with no other Bulldog scoring more than five points. Kyle Erickson was the top rebounder with eight and Clarington had four steals and three assists. Gabe Rucker also dished out three assists. Four players scored in double figures for the Blue Hawks. Casper Hesseldal had a huge night, scoring 30 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. John Hanstad hit six of 11 three-point shots to score 25 and Jarek Hansen and Tevin Hurd scored 11 and 10, respectively. Matt Lee also grabbed 10 rebounds and Dickinson won the battle of the boards, 46-31. Hesseldal and Lee each had six assists. The Bulldogs fell to 7-3 on the season while Dickinson State improved to 5-6. Montana Western returns home to host the University of Calgary Dinos in the Straugh Gymnasium on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. It will be the Bulldogs' first home game in over a month. The last time Montana Western enjoyed the comfort of the home court advantage was on Oct. 29.
