By Lowell Peterson The University of Montana Western Bulldogs men’s and women’s rodeo teams competed at the Big Sky Region rodeo at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds in Helena, Mont. on April 20 and 21. Eleven Montana colleges and one Wyoming college participated in more than 320 runs and rides during the rodeo. The University of Montana Western (UMW) men’s team scored 585 points and finished in a first-place tie with Miles Community College. Northwest College (Wyoming) scored 403 points to win the women’s competition while Montana State University (MSU) finished second with 334 points. Tucker Zingg, a senior business major at Montana Western, was named the men’s All Around Cowboy with 321 points and Steffani Hofrichter from Northwest College was the women’s All Around Cowgirl with 271 points. Zingg and team roping partner Tyler "Chicky" Wines won the team roping competition with a score of 7.0 seconds, and Bulldog teammates Haily Hamlin and Colton Sargent finished in a third-place tie at 8.1 seconds. Zingg also finished in third place in bareback riding with 69 points and Wines was fourth in tie down roping at 10.4 seconds. Colt Gardner of Montana Western won the tie down roping event with a time of 9.7 seconds. Bulldog Bridger Chambers and partner Chase Briggs placed fifth in the team roping. In the steer wrestling event, cousins Parker Bignell (UMW) and Tyler Erickson (MSU) battled it out for the top spot. Bignell’s Friday time of 4.4 seconds was topped by Erickson’s time of 4.0 seconds on Saturday, forcing Bignell to settle for a second-place tie with Newt Novich of Northwest College. Erickson increased his lead as first in the current regional standings with the victory. “I just wanted to score sharp,” Erickson said. “But the main thing is, I beat my cousin Parker,” he added with a grin. In the women’s events, Bulldog teammates Kelly Saltness placed fifth in goat tying and Sammy Naveran placed sixth. Dillon's Danielle Staudenmeyer, rodeoing for MSU, placed third in goat tying.
The University of Montana Western has launched a national search for the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs position.
