"My Mother's Striped Dress" by Lucy Capehart. Cyanotype on Paper, 52"x40", 2011. Artist Lucy Capehart will begin the fall exhibition season at the University of Montana Western Art Gallery with an exhibit entitled "The Story of Things" on display from Aug. 27 through Sept. 19.

Capehart's work reflects the loss of her parents, who were killed on a plane crash when she was seven years old. Using garments from her parents as the subject of her cyanotype photographs, Capehart says she has sought to learn more about their identity.

"The dresses and shirts were stored in the third floor of our house for many years," Capehart explains. "There was never an explanation of why they were kept or their significance for my parents. After the plane crash the collective family grief was so great my parents were rarely mentioned. As I grew older I regarded these saved garments as tangible evidence of their existence and used them to try and piece together their identities."

The Montana Western Art Gallery is located on the UMW campus, 710 South Atlantic Street, at the south entrance of Main Hall. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
