University of Montana School of Music faculty member and acclaimed cellist Fern Glass Boyd will perform live and facilitate a musical workshop at the University of Montana Western on Monday, Oct. 29.
Glass Boyd will present a "mini recital" in the lounge of the UMW music room on the north end of the fourth floor of Main Hall from 11:20 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. She will then present a workshop and master class in the band/choir room, which is also on the fourth floor of Main Hall on the UMW campus from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Glass Boyd began studying music at the Settlement Music School before earning degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Yale University. She also performed as a member of the graduate string quartet at both institutions. As an active recitalist and clinician, she performs regularly throughout Montana and the Northwest. She was featured on the album “Beneath a Northern Sky” with the String Orchestra of the Rockies.
Glass Boyd served as president of the Montana chapter of the American String Teachers Association and is also a member of The College Music Society, the Violoncello Society, Inc. of America and the Music Educators National Conference, among other organizations.
Glass Boyd is also the cellist of the Montana Piano Trio, the principal cellist of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra and is the artistic director, principal cellist and founding member of the String Orchestra of the Rockies. She also teaches music literature, general education in music and string methods and pedagogy at the University of Montana.
Both events on the Montana Western campus are free and open to the public. Cellists wishing to take part in the workshop are encouraged to bring a stringed instrument.
