UMW names B.J. Robertson new football coach
May 30th, 2013
The University of Montana Western announced B.J. Robertson as the new Bulldog head football coach. Robertson is a 1998 business education alumnus of Montana Western and played running back for the Bulldog football team.
Robertson will replace outgoing head coach Ryan Nourse, who was named the new UMW athletic director on May 23, 2013. Nourse will become athletic director effective July 1, 2013. Robertson will begin coaching duties with the team immediately and will officially take over the program upon approval by the Montana Board of Regents.“B.J. is ready for the challenge of being a head coach in the Frontier Conference,” Nourse said. “He played at Montana Western and has coached for the past six years in the Frontier. He knows Montana coaches and kids as well as anyone, and that is important to building a successful program here. His football coaching experience is excellent. He has been an offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, special teams coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and he spent the last two seasons on the defensive side of the ball.”
Robertson’s top priority will be preparing the Bulldog team for the 2013 season in a relatively short time frame.
“This is a great time to take over the program,” Robertson said. “Another great recruiting class is already secured, Montana Western has an excellent young roster of football talent and the foundation for a successful and sustaining football program is set.”
Robertson has been an assistant coach at Rocky Mountain College since 2007. His responsibilities at the Frontier Conference rival included special teams and defensive backs. He also served as recruitment coordinator and strength and conditioning coach.
Prior to Rocky Mountain, Robertson served in assistant coaching positions at Southern Oregon University and Rockford College. He began his coaching career as offensive coordinator and linebacker coach at Twin Bridges High School.
During his career, Robertson coached numerous Frontier Conference standouts and instructed at a number of university summer football camps. In 2005, he was named Rockford College staff member of the year.
“B.J. is going to make a great leader for our football program,” UMW Chancellor Richard Storey said. “He has phenomenal Frontier Conference experience as well as extensive knowledge of our program and a passion for Bulldog athletics. We are very fortunate to have him on board and I am very confident he will oversee a positive, smooth transition for our players.”
Robertson said he is proud to be Montana Western’s new head football coach.
“I am excited and honored at the opportunity to return to my alma mater and lead the football program,” Robertson added. “I appreciate the trust Chancellor Storey and Montana Western have put in my ability to move Bulldog football forward.”
Robertson also holds a master of arts in physical education from Rockford College.
