Angela McLean receives Distinguished Alumni AwardAnaconda educator Angela McLean is the recipient of the 2009 University of Montana Western Distinguished Alumni Award.

“I am truly humbled and honored to even be considered,” McLean said.  “I love what I do and cannot imagine doing anything else.  There are so many mornings I  walk into my classroom, look around and think “it doesn’t get any better than this. So, to be honored for doing what I love to do is icing on the cake!”

McLean is a 1989 graduate of  Twin Bridges High School of Twin Bridges, Mont. and a 1994 graduate of Western Montana College (now Montana Western) in Dillon, Mont. She received her masters degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Montana in 2000. McLean received National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2005.

She has taught at Anaconda High School since 1997. In 2003, she was named the Best High School Teacher by the Montana Standard. In 2007, her innovative classroom methods led to her receiving  the $25,000 Milken Family Foundation Educator Award for Montana.

In 2008, she was the recipient of a Milken Festival for Youth Grant for “Operation Read to Me” a program where elementary students who need reading help are mentored to by students at Anaconda High School.

She is also the recipient of a Michael Jordan Innovations in Education Grant, a Teaching Tolerance Grant and was a U.S. Department of Education Teaching American History Grant team member.

In 2006, McLean was appointed by Governor Brian Swchweitzer to the Montana Board of Public Education and currently serves as Vice Chair.

She has been a facilitator for the Montana National Board of Certification since 2007 and has served on the MEA-MFT legislative committee in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Angela and her husband Michael are the parents of Colin, age 9 and Ellen, age 4.
