The University of Montana Western Art Gallery and Museum presents artist Willem Volkersz’s “Western Landscapes," open now through Dec. 4, 2009. The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 5 from 7 to 10 p.m. Volkersz will be on hand for the reception. Volkersz says he attempts to bridge the gap between high and low art with his unique mixed-media installations. His work includes everything from sculpture and neon to kitschy antique trinkets and huge paint-by-number paintings. Volkersz says the art reflects “an immigrant’s fascination with America.” “With these mixed media installations, I hope to reflect my love of American popular culture,” Volkersz explains. Volkersz, a Montana resident, also focuses his work on the Montana landscape, including the changes growth and development bring to the region. “The work in this exhibition celebrates the joys of the Montana landscape, but also chronicles the changes we see all around us,” Volkersz says. The Montana Western Art Gallery and Museum is located on the south end of Main Hall on the UMW campus. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
