UMW NEWS BUREAU The University of Montana Western women’s basketball team will open the 2010-2011 season with a pair of home games this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29 and 30. The Bulldogs will tip off against Minot State University at 4 p.m. on Friday before battling Dickinson State University at 3 p.m. on Saturday. All games will be in the Straugh Gymnasium. The Montana Western women are coming off an 8-20 season, which included a 4-10 record in the Frontier Conference. Head Coach Cara Cocchiarella begins her second season as the leader of the Bulldogs and returns five players who earned significant minutes during the 2009-2010 season. Senior Chloe Mosey and junior Nicole Tams are the only upperclassmen on the Montana Western roster. Mosey averaged 7.5 points per game and 3.8 rebounds while leading the team in free throw percentage. Tams led the Bulldogs in scoring last season averaging 10.2 points per game. Three sophomores round out the group of returning players. Alecia Wilson returns to run the point guard position after leading the team in assists as a true freshman. Rheanna Padden averaged 4.5 points per game on the perimeter while Laura Geis brings experience to the post after averaging 6.1 points and leading the team in blocked shots. Friday’s matchup features Minot State from the Dakota Athletic Conference. The Beavers will enter Straugh Gymnasium as the number 13 ranked NAIA Division II team in the nation. Minot is coming off a 21-9 season that featured two wins over the Bulldogs including a 68-67 thriller in Minot. On Saturday afternoon, the Dickinson State Bluehawks will visit Montana Western. Dickinson State split with the Bulldogs last season with each team winning on their home court.
