UMW NEWS BUREAU University of Montana Western head football coach Ryan Nourse has added two new assistants to his coaching roster. Jason Thier and Nick Whitworth will join the Bulldogs for the 2011-12 season. Thier is the Bulldogs special teams coach and strength and conditioning coach while Whitworth comes on board as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator. Thier comes to Montana Western from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. where he was the defensive graduate assistant. Whitworth will be making the transition to the Bulldog football squad from Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho where he was the special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator, and summer camp coordinator as well as assistant coach for running backs, tight ends, punters, kickers, and snappers. Nourse, who took the helm of the Bulldog football squad in December 2010, said Thier and Whitworth will round out his coaching staff, which also includes Wes Warren, Zach Parks, and Jeff Hansen. Jason Thier became the graduate assistant coach at Augustana in April 2010. He is finishing a master’s degree in education from Augustana and also holds a bachelor of science in mathematics from Truman State University (TSU) in Kirksville, Mo. Thier was the varsity defensive line coach at Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Ariz. in 2009. He served as the assistant offensive linebacker coach at Truman State University during spring 2009. While a student at TSU, Thier was a three-year starter and four-year varsity letter player on the football team. His accomplishments there include the 2008 team M.V.P.; 2008 team captain; and 2008 All-Conference Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Linebacker. As a coach at Augustana, Thier helped lead the Vikings to an 11-2 regular season record and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division championship in 2010. “Jason played for me when I was at Truman State,” Coach Nourse said. “He prepared very well for our games. You could tell he loved the game and put everything he had into it. It was a pretty easy decision for me knowing he would transition into a great football coach. Jason has great energy and enthusiasm. You can tell he has great passion for coaching and working with kids.” Nick Whitworth worked for the Idaho State University football squad from 2003 to 2010. During his time at ISU, Whitworth recruited 50 players in seven recruiting seasons, including five all-American players and 16 All-Big Sky Conference players. Under Whitworth, the ISU special teams led the Big Sky Conference in net punting, kick-off defense, punt returns and were second in kick-off returns. Whitworth also served as the graduate assistant for offense, running backs, recruiting and special teams from 2001 to 2002. As a player, Whitworth was an all-conference, all-area, and all-state running back and linebacker for Mackay High School in Mackay, Idaho. At the college level Whitworth was an honorable mention all-conference running back and kick returner for Idaho State University. “We’re truly fortunate to have Nick,” Nourse said. “He was an excellent player at ISU. He comes with a very diverse offensive knowledge. He’s a very intense, passionate guy, which I think we can bring to our offensive group. Nick is also an outstanding recruiter, which really drew me to him too. I think kids are really going to enjoy playing for him.”
