The Maintenance Engineer operates boilers equipped with pneumatic and electronic automatic
controls. Maintains proper steam pressures and water levels; adjusts equipment to maintain flow of
steam to meet load requirements; tends boiler feed water pumps, water treatment system and other
boiler room equipment. Operates two high-pressure fire tube boilers and the electric boiler feed water
pumps to maintain water level in boilers. Performs maintenance and repair of all equipment and the
distribution system throughout buildings. Maintain a constant watch on all boiler auxiliary equipment
(pumps, fans, compressors, pressure reducing valves, safety valves, and all related equipment) and all
gauges and recorders. Performs water tests, adds chemicals and monitors the water softener. Switches
fuels and power supplies to auxiliaries in the event of gas and/or electric power failure. Monitors
building control center, responds to and reports mechanical alarms. Performs cleaning and general
custodial care of the plant including painting of boilers and related equipment. Assist in the installation
and maintenance of drain, waste, and vent plumbing systems; water piping of various types, all types of
plumbing fixtures; water using appliances and equipment; water mains and fire hydrants; sewer mains
and storm drains; water conditioning equipment; irrigation systems; fire sprinkler systems including
testing of fire alarm systems; steam systems and steam related equipment; gas lines and gas using
appliances; pneumatic systems and controls. Read blueprints to install and/or maintain systems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
The successful candidate must be a high school graduate with three years of boiler maintenance, one
year experience in the operation of pneumatic and electronic controls or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
