The Future of Upward Bound: Legislative Update

Status:         Refunded!

Summary:

            In February 2006, President Bush cut Upward Bound from his national budget for the second year in a row. However, Congress voted to refund Upward Bound, this measure enjoying bi-partisan (both Republican and Democratic) support again, but passing by just two votes (215-213).

Funding:

            Upward Bound programs will be “level funded” for the fourth consecutive year, although it (and other discretionary Federal programs) received a 1.2 % cut to pay for Defense appropriations.



            We will work hard to give you all the same great learning experiences although the costs of the program keep rising without the funding rising to meet those costs…We’ll make it work even if it means another summer of making our own breakfasts and lunches!

            Kudos to those of you who wrote to Congress to educate them about Upward Bound last year and to those who wrote this year to re-affirm your thoughts about Upward Bound.

            No matter what your opinion of Upward Bound is, it is important to exercise your right to representation and let your Congress –men and –women know what citizens want and need. Always remember the reason for free, public education is to keep citizens educated and vocal!
