TRiO Math/Science Upward Bound
![]() Application Information Who can participate in TRiO MSUB?
You are qualified to compete for your first participation in TRiO MSUB at UM-Western if you meet the requirements by each numbered item below:
(You are automatically eligible to compete with an application if you are already in an Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search program in Montana, and your program director gives approval, and you are currently in grades 9, 10, or 11.)
1) you are in a high school served by our program [see list of high schools], AND
2) you will complete grade 9, 10, or 11 in spring 2006, AND
3) you meet at least one of the following conditions--
a) your family's 2006 annual taxable income is low enough [$30,000 maximum for a family of 4 (2006 guideline)] OR
b) neither of your parents will have a 4-year college degree by the time you are accepted into the program.
The income guideline is based on taxable income, not gross income and not adjusted gross income. On the 2005 federal tax return form 1040, taxable income was on line 40. On the 2005 federal form 1040A, taxable income was on line 27 and on form 1040EZ it was on line 6. The guideline changes a little each year and must be adjusted for family size. A family size smaller than 4 needs to make less, and a larger family can make more and still qualify. For more information about income eligibility for Trio programs click here.
If you are in foster care or are a ward of the state, and do not receive regular support from parents or guardians, then you only need to meet numbers 1 and 2 above in order to compete.
If you have already participated in our program for a summer:
You must compete in a re-application process that will be based partly upon your previous record. Not only will your involvement and progress last summer be considered, but your participation in MSUB academic activities during this school year will be important. No matter what you may be thinking about your own evaluation and chances, we encourage you to re-apply. Although academic-year activities during the school year have not been weighed so heavily in the past, they will become more important as we get more applications each year. You do not have to re-qualify by family income or parents' education once you've been in our program at UM-Western.
