TRiO Math/Science Upward Bound

Summer 2003

We began the summer of 2003 with some team-building exercises and training on map, compass, and GPS use in preparation for our field work.  During the first week we also took part in Aikido, Latin, and Excel classes, not to mention workshops that help students prepare for college.

By the second week our students took specially arranged classes in critical thinking, math, technical writing, use of PowerPoint software, and public speaking. They also divided in research groups at this time.  This year the students were able to choose from four subjects to study from.

The moose group, led by Chris Guttenberg, reconstructed the history of browsing pressure on willows from the moose population. Another group explored amphibians. The amphibians group surveyed for presence of amphibians in the Pioneer Mountains.   Other students, led by biologist Peter Lamothe, studied the grayling habitat. The engineering group, headed by Anderson Engineering, explored all aspects of building trebuchets, and constructed two. By the end of the summer students prepared research papers and symposium presentations in their research groups.  The presentations were enjoyed by fellow students, staff and parents.

During the weekends there were activity trips to the UM campus in Missoula for the Statewide Upward Bound Olympics, an orienteering contest in the Pioneer Mountains, and Virginia City Days at Virginia City State Park.

In the fourth week MSUB traveled to Newport on the Oregon coast for an entire week.  The students visited many different aquariums and sea life exhibits, including a whole day at the Hatfield Institute! We even took a sea life cruise and saw three whales.  The trip was not complete until we explored downtown Newport and ate at Mo’s Famous Seafood.  On the way back to Montana we stopped at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and watched an IMAX movie.
