Head Cashier/Collections

Department: Business Services Position: Full-time, 10-month Wage: $10.00 to $11.50 per hour, full benefits package Union Affiliation: Montana Public Employees Association Posting Date: November 2012 

Description The Head Cashier/Collections position responsibilities include:

  • Accepting and processing cash, check or credit card payments and deposits from a diverse population;
  • Accurately applying payments and deposits to appropriate accounts;
  • Accurately verifying and giving receipts to all collections against appropriate accounts using the Banner Student System;
  • Researching and analyzing student accounts and responding to inquiries;
  • Locating and notifying customers of delinquent accounts and soliciting payment;
  • Working with customers to identify most effective repayment plans;
  • Providing change orders to departments upon request;
  • Reconciling receipts with collections recorded on Student Banner;
  • Preparing the “Cashier Daily Report” for audit review;
  • Auditing departmental cash handling procedures;
  • Reconciling office vault cash and preparing the daily bank deposit;
  • Answering telephones, researching problem payments, collecting and inputting scholarship checks, preparing future semester scholarship spread sheets and assisting in different areas of the department when needed.
Requirements A combination of a high school diploma and four or more years of work experience in a related field are required. Candidates must also have experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and database systems. Candidates must also have demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail as well as excellence in customer service. Preference may be granted to candidates with associate or higher degrees and cashier, teller or Banner experience.

Qualifications The successful candidate will have excellent cash-handling and record-keeping skills, the ability to review multiple sources of information quickly and communicate information to the customer and the ability to work effectively under pressure of deadlines, interruptions and a heavy workload. Candidates must also have demonstrated judgment in determining the applicability of policies and procedures, organizational skills to prioritize work and complete assignments in an accurate and timely manner, effective communication skills with the ability to relay information in a clear and concise manner and the capacity to effectively solicit payment on delinquent accounts. A demonstrated work ethic and commitment to professionalism is crucial to this position. Candidates must also have the ability to effectively and tactfully interact with diverse groups of people and work effectively in a team situation, the ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential materials as well as excellent ten-key and data-entry skills.
