Five Bulldogs Earn All-Conference Honors

Jake Larson, a 6’1”, 195 lb senior wide receiver from Butte, Mont., was named to the first team. Larson led the team in receiving with 42 catches for 584 yards and six touchdowns. He set a new school record for career yards with 2966 yards. Larson finished second in the Frontier in receiving yards and fourth in catches per game.

Travis Blome, a 5’11”, 180 lb quarterback from Billings, Mont., was named to the second team. Blome led the Frontier Conference in passing by completing 57 percent of his passes (198 of 349) for 2234 yards and 14 touchdowns with only five interceptions.

Michael Guelff, a 5’7”, 150 lb wide receiver from Billings, Mont., was named to the second team. Guelff was second on the team in receiving with 37 catches for 444 yards and two touchdowns. He was second in the Frontier in catches per game and fourth in receiving yards per game.

Albert Distajo, a 5-9, 175 lb sophomore defensive linebacker from Nanakuli, Hawaii, was named to the second team defense. Distajo led the Bulldogs and finished second in the Frontier in tackles with 38 unassisted and 60 assisted tackles. He had one interception.

Brad Hollen, 6’2”, 185 lb sophomore punter/kicker earned second team honors as a punter. Hollen had 57 punts for 2296 yards or 40.3 yards per punt.

The Bulldogs closed the book on the 2006 season with a 37-17 loss at Eastern Oregon. Western ends the 2006 season with a 1-9 overall and conference record.

The Bulldog scores came on a second quarter 22 yard touchdown pass from Travis Blome to Kehai Sevilla and a fourth quarter 20 yard scoring strike from Keali'i Perbera to Keahua Bowman.

The Bulldog defense had no answer for the Eastern Oregon ground attack as the Mountaineers rushed for 354 yards. Eastern Oregon's defense held the Bulldog offense to 245 yards.

Game Notes, Montana Western at Eastern Oregon

Game 10: The University of Montana Western Bulldogs travel to La Grande, Ore. for a Frontier Conference game against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers.

Kickoff: 12 p.m. (PST) from Community Stadium in La Grande, Ore.

On the Radio: The game will be broadcast in southwest Montana on KDBM Radio, 1490 on the radio dial.

Season Records: Montana Western is 1-8 on the season and in the Frontier Conference play. Eastern Oregon is 5-5 on the season and 4-5 in league play.

Last Week: Montana Western captured their first victory of the season with a 34-21 win over Rocky Mountain College. In the game, the Bulldog defense forced seven turnovers. Quarterback Travis Blome threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns and was named Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Week. John Lee Fantroy returned an interception 66 yards for the Bulldogs first defensive touchdown of the season.

Last Week: Eastern recorded a 10-7 upset win over then #7 MSU-Northern. Mountaineer defensive back Sean O’Brien was named the Frontier Conference and NAIA Defensive Player of the Week. O’Brien had two interceptions one of which was returned 77 yards for Eastern Oregon’s only touchdown of the game.

Last Meeting: Oct. 7. Eastern Oregon downed Montana Western 28-21 in Dillon.

Last Year: Eastern edged the Bulldogs 22-17 in Le Grande.

Bulldog Individual Leaders: Derrick Pluff leads the team in rushing with 340 yards on 72 carries. Travis Blome leads the conference in passing with 180 of 315 for 2048 yards and 13 touchdowns. Jake Larson leads the Bulldog receivers with 37 catches for 527 yards and six touchdowns followed by Michael Guelff with 33 catches for 401 yards and two touchdowns, and Craigh Cornelius with 30 catches for 378 yards and two touchdowns. Albert Distajo is second in the Frontier in tackles with 9.9 tackles per game. Aric Harris is eighth in the conference in tackles with 7.3 tackles per game

Montana Western Team Stats: Western averages 295 yards and 17 points per game.

Eastern Oregon Individual Leaders: Travis Morscheck leads the team in rushing with 429 yards on 95 carries. Jomo Wilson leads the team in receiving with 33 catches for 434 yards and four touchdowns. Corey Dunn leads the team in tackles with 7.8 per game.

Eastern Oregon team stats: Eastern averages 274.8 yards per game and 16 poins per game.

Bulldogs Tame Bears For First Win

Travis Blome threw three touchdown passes to lead the University of Montana Western to their first victory of the season, a 34-21 over win over the Rocky Mountain College Bears.

The Bulldogs are now 1-8 on the season and 1-8 in Frontier Conference play.

Senior cornerback Aric Harris ended Rocky's second possesion with the Bulldogs first interception of the game.

The Bulldog offense took advantage of Rocky's mistake and marched 80 yards and got on the scoreboard first with a Derek Pluff four yard touchdown run. Rocky blocked the extra point try and the Bulldogs lead 6-0.

Rocky scored on their next possession on a Jimmy Beal 14 yard touchdown scamper. With the extra point, the Bears lead 7-6. That would be their only lead of the game.

The Bulldogs committed their only turnover of the game, a fumble, on their next series. Junior linebacker Albert Distajo got the ball back with the Bulldog's second interception.

The Rocky defense held and forced the Bulldogs to punt. The Bulldog defense pushed Rocky back to their own 11. Western’s Michael Sermon blocked the Rocky punt to give the Bulldogs their next scoring opportunity on Rocky's eight-yard line.

Two plays later, Montana Western regained the lead on Blome’s first touchdown pass, a five-yard strike to Jake Larson. Blome then hit Michael Guelff on the two-point conversation and the Bulldogs led 14-7 at the half.

Montana Western extended their lead to 21-7 on a Blome to Matt Allen three-yard touchdown pass and a Brad Hollen extra point kick at the 12 minute mark of the third quarter.

The Bulldogs added another touchdown on Blome’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Craigh Cornelius. After Hollen’s extra point kick, Montana Western lead was 28-7.

On the second play of the next series, Rocky cut the lead to 28-14 on a 75-yard quarterback keeper by Casey Gregersen.

Rocky's defense forced the Bulldogs to punt and the Bears appeared to mount another scoring drive. Montana Western’s John Lee Fantroy ended the drive with an interception returned 66 yards for a touchdown. After the P.A.T., the Bulldogs led 34-14.

The Bears then marched 80 yards in nine plays capped by a three yard touchdown pass from Gregersen to Clint Franklin to cut the led to 34-21.

Rocky attempted an onside kick, but the kick was covered by the Bulldogs’ Omar Rodriguez. Montana Western ran out the clock and the Bulldogs had their first victory of the season.

For the afternoon, Blome was 24 of 32 for 236 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Jake Larson and Derek Pluff caught five passes apiece.

In all, the Bulldog defense forced six Rocky turnovers, three interceptions and three fumbles, recovering one.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, Montana Western will close out the season at Eastern Oregon while Rocky closes their season in Helena, Mont. against Carroll College.

Game Notes: Montana Western vs Rocky Mountain

Game 9: The University of Montana Western Bulldogs host the Rocky Mountain College Bears, Saturday, Nov. 4. It is Senior Day and Parent’s Day. Bulldog senior and the parent’s of all players will be honored.

Kickoff: 3 p.m. from Dillon’s Vigilante Field (Please note kickoff time, this game only. The change in time is to accommodate the Dillon-Butte Central playoff game.

Season Records: Montana Western is 0-8 on the season and in the Frontier Conference play. Rocky is 2-7 on the season and 1-7 in league play.

Last Week: Montana Western lost an overtime heartbreaker to Montana Tech 30-27. Western sent the game into overtime on a last second 85 yard touchdown pass from Travis Blome to Omar Rodriguez. In overtime, the Bulldogs had the ball first but Tech’s defense held and Bulldogs settled for a Brad Hollen field goal and a three-point lead. The Orediggers scored the winning touchdown down on an eight yard touchdown pass.

Last Week: Rocky Mountain also lost an overtime thriller. The Bears led Eastern Oregon 21-0 midway through the third quarter. EOU charged back with 28 points while holding Rocky to only seven. The Bears scored first in overtime, but Eastern bounced back to score and send the game into its second overtime. EOU had the ball first in the second overtime and scored on the fourth play of the second overtime. The Eastern Oregon defense then held on a fourth down to seal the win.

Last Meeting: Sept. 30. Rocky downed the Bulldogs 34-17 in Billings.

Last Year: The two teams split their series last year with each winning at home. Rocky won in Billings 44-20 and Western won in Dillon 45-13.

Bulldog Individual Leaders: Derrick Pluff leads the team in rushing with 336 yards and one touchdown. Travis Blome continues to lead the conference in passing with 230 yards a game. His favorite targets are Michael Guelff (31 catches, 391 yards, two touchdowns), Jake Larson (32 catches, 480 yds, five touchdowns, Larson is the Bulldogs’ new career leader in yards receiving) Craigh Cornelius (27 catches, 349 yds, one touchdown). Brad Hollen leads the conference in P.A.T’s with a perfect 14 for 14 and punting with a 40.7 average. On defense, Albert Distajo leads the team in tackles with 77 (32 unassisted, 45 assisted, 2nd in league) followed by Aric Harris with 51 (15unassisted, 36 assisted).

Montana Western Team Stats: Western averages 301 yards and 14.9 points per game. Defensively, Western gives up 444.4 yards and 32.5 points per game.

Rocky Individual Leaders: Jimmy Beal leads Rocky in rushing with 660 yards and six touchdowns. Vance Vincent is 118 of 230 for 128 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Jason Hagadone leads the team in receiving with 43 catches for 530 yards and four touchdowns followed by Justin Airola with 28 catches for 416 yards and five touchdowns. Roger Larson leads Rocky and the Frontier in tackles with 92 (34 unassisted and 58 assisted).

Rocky team stats: Rocky averages 295.6 yards and 16.4 points per game. The Bears give up 347 yards and 30.2 points per game.

Kickoff Moved

The University of Montana Western will move the kickoff of their Frontier Conference game with Rocky Mountain College on Saturday, Nov. 4 to 3 p.m. to accommodate the Dillon Beavers’ second round Class A Playoff game against Butte Central scheduled for 11 a.m. Both games will be played at Dillon’s Vigilante Field.
