Bulldog Golfers Open 2003-2004 Season
Tuesday, December 7 2004
September 7, 2003 -- The University of Montana-Western golf teams open the 2003-2004 season at the Butte Country Club Monday, September 8 and Tuesday, September 9. Last year, both the men's and women's teams finished third in the conference.

"It was disappointing from the men's team after the spring season," said Bulldog coach Mark Durham. "We were leading going into the Spring season and then hit a snag when Josh Peterson was declared academically ineligible after Christmas. He was our solid number three or four and we really missed him. It is always tough in the Spring because of bad weather, which keeps us away from the course and practice rounds that we really need to stay consistent. I was disappointed because we had a good team. Both West (Hernandez) and Brandon (Davison) were first team All Conference selections. We did finish strong in both mens and women's and that is a positive to build on going into this season."

Durham will build the 2003-04 squad around Jon Allen, a Dillon senior who earned second team All-Conference honors last year.

"Jon, Josh Peterson of Butte and Josh Schad of Libby will be our leaders for this coming year," added Durham. "The rest of the team, both newcomers and redshirts, are really bunched up and will battle for playing position. It is going to be interesting to watch them in tournaments and challenges throughout the season. They are all very close in ability and we will see who steps up in the tournaments and distances themselves from the others. There are eleven out for golf, and I feel if we play solid, we can be in the second, third, fourth range. And, it is time for Jon to step up and get into the top five along with "Petey" (Josh Peterson) who has chance to slide into the top five too. Rounding out the men's team are Beau Paulsen (of Victor), Erik Butts (of Hamilton) and Seth Kuhl (of Superior) redshirts from last year, freshmen are Lance Bosen (of Taylorsville, Utah), Dan Hazlett (of Superior), and Dallas Schedel (of Willow Creek) and walk-ons are Travis Cottom and Phil Thompson (of Dillon). We have a lot of depth on the men's team, but I am not sure who is going to step up. Depth this year is a plus, something we haven't had in the past."

In college golf, each team can play five golfers per tournament with the top four scores counting towards the team's score. In men's competition, Durham will take an additional three golfers to each tournament. This will give those golfers actual tournament experience.

Katie Blades, a senior from Dillon, is the lone returning letterman on the women's team. Blades earned second team All-Conference honors last season.

"With her experience, I am looking at Katie to be the leader on the women's team," said Durham. "Katie, along freshmen Kacee Tash from Dillon and Allison J. Bethel of Corvallis and Katie Wilson (Choteau), who went to school here last year but didn't play golf, round out the team. They are pretty solid and should have a good year. They have looked good in their practice rounds and they could be one of our better women's teams."

Last year, Lewis-Clark College of Idaho won the men's title, while Rocky Mountain College won their fifth straight conference title and went on to finish second at the NAIA National Championship.

"Looking at this year, on the women's side, you have to look at Rocky and L-C as the favorites," said Durham. "On the men's side, you to look at Lewis-Clark as the favorite, along with Montana Tech and Westminster and Rocky have a good group returning. On the men's side, there are more teams that can sneak up and challenge for title."
