The University of Montana Western golf teams open their 2006-2007 season Sunday, Sept. 10 and Monday, Sept. 11 at Fairmont Hot Springs. Montana Tech hosts the tournament.

“I really like the look of our teams this year,” said head coach Mark Durham. “Both teams feature experienced veterans and very talented newcomers. Our tournaments really test the golfers, both mentally and physically. Our kids know what it takes and that is exciting as we enter the season. The prospects for a successful season are very good.”

For the women’s team, the veterans include senior Allie Bethel of Stevensville, Mont., junior Ashley Meine of Dillon, Mont., sophomore Tatum Hoehn of Seeley Lake, Mont., and junior Lisa Minnehan of Anaconda, Mont. Talented newcomer Amanda Carlson of Las Vegas, Nev. should make an immediate impact in the program.

“Lewis-Clark and Rocky are the teams to beat on the women’s side,” added Durham. “We finished third last year, but with the make-up of the team, I think we will make a serious run for the top.”

The men’s team is led by returning juniors Danny Oberweiser and Tyler McCabe, both from Deer Lodge, Mont. and sophomore Tanner Lagge from Great Falls, Mont. Newcomers include Logan Kugler of Polson, Mont., Bryan Moore of Shelby, Mont., Ben Pearce of Boulder Junction, Wis., Dan Saintz of Titusville, Pa. and Jason Schumacher of Dillon, Mont.

“L-C, Rocky, and Montana Tech have to be the front-runners for the men’s side,” said Durham. “But, with the guys we have coming back and the guys coming in, we should definitely improve on our sixth place finish a year ago.”
