Bulldogs Drop Two on the Road

The Bulldogs fell victim to cold shooting as they lost their second straight Frontier Conference game. Western shot an icey 28% in a 65-43 loss at Lewis-Clark State. The Bulldogs were held to a season low in scoring.

Bo Segeberg was the only Bulldog scoring in double figures as he scored 17. Matt Luedtke, the league's top scorer was held to only three points. Western was outrebounded 41-34 wtih Segeberg pulling down six to lead the team.

Saturday night, Western lost 80-68 at Westminster. The tough Griffin defense held the Bulldogs to 44% from the field.

Bo Segeberg once again led the Bulldog scoring and rebounding with 27 points and eight rebounds, followed by Luedke with 16.

Western looks to snap their three game losing streak when they host University of Great Falls on Friday, February 4 and MSU-Northernn on Saturday, February 5.

Bulldogs on the Road at Lewis-Clark and Westminster

The Bulldogs hit the road for a pair of Frontier Conference games against two nationally ranked opponents. The Bulldogs face the Lewis-Clark State Warriors on Thursday, January 27 and the Westminster College Griffins on Saturday, January 29.

The Bulldogs are 15-6 on the season and 4-1 in league play after splitting a home series with Rocky Mountain and Carroll College. Western beat Rocky 85-69 but lost to Carroll 84-75 for their first conference loss of the season. The Bulldogs dropped one place, from 17 to 18 in the latest NAIA Power Poll.

Lewis-Clark also split their weekend series. The Warriors beat University of Great Falls 58-44 but lost to MSU-Northern 58-56 for their first conference loss of the season. Lewis-Clark is now 16-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Warriors dropped from 9 to 11 in the latest rankings. Danny Allen leads four players scoring in double figures for the Warriors. Allen averages 14.05 points followed by Martin Brothers with 13.29, John Moore with 10.08 and Joey Ray with 10 points per game. Brothers leads the team in rebounding with 8.68 rebounds per game. The Warriors average 71.7 points a game and give up 59.3, the best in the Frontier.

Westminster College swept their weekend series on the Highline. The Griffins beat MSU-Northern 64-54 and edged UGF 62-59. Westminster is now 4-1 in the Frontier and 14-7 overall and ranked 25th in the nation. Shane Humphreys leads Westminster with 13 points a game followed by Jared Ruiz with 12.5 points a game. Nick Booth leads the Griffins in rebounding with 5.71 rebounds a game. Westminster averages 72.4 points per game while giving up 65.6.

" This a big week for us,” said Bulldog coach Mark Durham. “We slipped up and lost a home game so if we are going to still give ourselves a chance to win the league we need to win at least one of these next two. We need to play much better defense if we are going to do that. We really played poorly on Saturday against Carroll. We will just take one game at a time and see what happens."

Western is led in scoring by the Frontier Conference's leading scorer Matt Luedtke with 24.4 points a game (3rd in nation) followed by Bo Segeberg with 18.8 and Tyler Palmer with 14.7. Segeberg leads the team in rebounding with 9.14 followed by Brandon Day with 5.90. Segeberg and Day are ranked 1-2 in the league in blocked shots. Palmer leads the conference and is second in the nation in free throw percentage. The Bulldogs lead the league and the nation in assists with 22.7 per game. The Bulldogs lead the Frontier and are seventh in the nation in scoring with 87.7 points a game. They also lead the league and are second in the nation in free throw percentage. The Bulldogs are tops in both the league and the nation in assists with 22.76 per game.

Western returns to Dillon on February 4 and 5 when they host the University of Great Falls and MSU-Northern.

Bulldogs Drop First Conference Game

BrandonvsCC.jpg DerekvsCC.jpg The Bulldogs dropped their first conference game as they fell to the Carroll College Saints 84-75 Saturday night from the Straugh Gymnasium. Western falls to 15-6 overall and 4-1 in the Frontier Conference.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and led 15-5 at the 16:00 minute mark. After a Carroll time out, the Saints outscored the Bulldogs 12-0 to take a17-15 lead at the 12:58 mark. Carroll then continued their hot streak 12-5 to take a 10 point lead at the 10:00 minute mark. The Saints cooled off and the Bulldogs found the range and slowly cut into the Saints lead. Tyler Palmer's three point field goal with five minutes left in the first half tied the game at 34. Palmer hit another long range bomb as time ran out to give the Bulldogs a 48-42 lead at the half.

Carroll's Andy Brown hit a three point field goal at the 17:00 minute mark to give Carroll a 53-50 lead, a lead they would never lose. Carroll was red hot and the Bulldogs icey cold down the stretch. Carroll's biggest lead of the half was 82-66 at the two minute mark of the ball game. Western tried to claw it's way back in but could not overcome Carroll's big lead.

Jeff Feenstra and Tyler Palmer led the Bulldogs with 18 points each. Matt Luedtke chipped in 12 followed by Bo Segeberg with 11.

The Bulldogs hit the road January 27 and 29 as they take on Lewis-Clark and Westminster. Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m.

Bulldogs Down Rocky In Frontier Conference Home Opener

TylervsRMC.jpg DILLON - The Western Bulldogs stayed unbeaten in Frontier Conference play with an 85-69 win over the Rocky Mountain College Bears. This raises the Bulldog record to 14-5 overall and 3-0 in the Frontier Conference. The Bears fall to 2-2 in the Conference and 13-7 overall.

Rocky jumped out early on the Bulldogs 7-0 and maintained a lead until the fourteen minute mark of the first half when a Matt Luedtke 3-pointer tied the game at 18. The two teams traded leads and baskets until the six minute mark when the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to build a ten point lead 41-31 at the three minute mark. Western led at the half 43-38.

Rocky opened up the second half outscoring the Bulldogs on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 45. Over the next 10 minutes the two teams battled evenly trading basket for basket. Tyler Palmer's free throw gave the Bulldogs a 60-59 lead which they maintained through the second half. Western used the free throw line to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs will host Carroll College Saturday, January 22 at the Straugh Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m.

Bulldogs Host Rocky and Carroll in Frontier Conference Action

The Bulldogs finally get to play a home game after playing their last five games on the road. Western hosts the Rocky Mountain College Bears on Friday, January 21 and the Carroll College Saints on Saturday, January 22 in a pair of Frontier Conference games.

Both games tip-off at 8:00 p.m. from Dillon's Straugh Gymnasium. Both games will also be web cast. The link is available on the men's basketball home page.

Western is 3-0 in league play and 14-5 overall after downing Montana Tech 97-73 last Friday night in Butte. The Bulldogs moved up in the NAIA Top-25, moving from 20 to 17.

Rocky is 13-7 on the season and 2-2 in league play after also picking up their first two conference wins against MSU-Northern 64-62 and the University of Great Falls 67-56

Carroll College picked up two conference wins last weekend with wins over MSU-Northern 99-73 and the University of Great Falls 95-61. The Saints are now 2-2 in league play and 14-5 overall. Carroll did not crack the Top-25 but did receive votes.

"Rocky and Carroll are both very good teams!" said Bulldog coach Mark Durham. "They both are good enough to win the league. "Both teams play good man defense and are very sound on offense.....keys for us in both games will be rebounding. "We need to control the boards at both ends. These should be very good games!"

Friday's Western-Rocky game and Saturday's Carroll-Western game matches up the top three scoring offenses in the the better offensive teams in the league. Western is first in the league and sixth in the nation with 88.6 points a game. Carroll is second in the Frontier and 16th in the nation with 83.9 points a game. Rocky is third in league in scoring with 82.2 points a game.

David Ellis leads Rocky in scoring with 15.7 points a game followed by Lunke Kunkel with 14.6 points a game. Bobby Coleman leads the Bears in rebounds with 6.20 a game. Kunkel leads the Frontier and is sixth in the nation in field goal percentage with an average of .657.

Carroll is led in scoring by Andy Brown and Sinan Guler, both averaging 14 poins a game. Guler leads the league in steals and is 18th in the nation. Brown leads Carroll in rebounding with 6.67 boards a game.

The Bulldogs are led in scoring by the Frontier's leading scorer Matt Luedtke with 25.5 points a game. Luedtke is third in the NAIA. Bo Segeberg averages 19.7 points a game and Tyler Palmer is next with 13.8. Segeberg leads the league and is ninth in the nation in rebounding with 9.32 per game.
Palmer leads the league and is second in the nation in free throw percentage with an average of 92.7%. Derek Hibbert leads the Frontier and is second in the nation in assists with 7.05 per game.

Next weekend, Western travels to Lewis-Clark and Westminster College for a pair of Frontier Conference games.

Bulldogs Keep "Digger-Dawg" Cup

The Bulldogs were red-hot on an icy-cold Montana night as they rolled over Montana Tech 97-73 in a Frontier Conference game from Butte.

The win gives the Bulldogs a 3-0 league mark and a 14-5 overall record. The win also keeps the "Digger-Dawg" cup in Dillon. Western leads in the "Cup"series 6-1.

The Bulldog opened the game with six 3-point field goals in the game's first five minutes. Brandon Day lead the way scoring 17 of his 19 points as Western led 52-35 at the half-time break. Day had three of the Bulldogs 13 first half three point field goals.

The scoring slowed down a bit in the second, but Tech could get no closer then 15 points .

Matt Luedtke led the Bulldogs with 24 followed by Day with 19, Tyler Palmer with 17 and Bo Segeberg with 10.

Western hosts Rocky on Friday followed by Carroll College on Saturday.

Bulldogs Battle Orediggers for "Digger-Dawg" Cup

The Bulldog basketball team travels to Butte for a Frontier Conference game against the Montana Tech Orediggers on Friday, January 14. Tipoff is 8:00 p.m. from the HPER Complex on the Tech campus.

Western is 13-5 overall and 2-0 in league play after last weekend's sweep over MSU-Northern (89-80 OT) and the University of Great Falls (99-70). The Bulldogs moved from 22 to 20 in the latest NAIA, Division I, Top-25.

Montana Tech is 5-13 overall and 0-2 in the Frontier. Last weekend, the Orediggers lost at UGF 66-65 and at MSU-Northern 68-57.

For the fourth year, the two conference rivals are playing for the “Digger-Dawg” Cup traveling trophy. Western won both games last season to maintain possession of the Cup and leads in the overall series of the Cup 5-1.

"We are looking forward to this week's game.” said Bulldog coach Mark Durham. “We still have a lot of improvements to make including getting better on the offensive boards, and handling ball pressure. Our defense is still a long ways from being where we need to be. The key to Tech is Davin Blixt! We need to do a good job of knowing where he is."

Matt Luedtke leads the Bulldogs and the Frontier Conference and is third in the nation in scoring with 25.6 points per game. Bo Segeberg leads the league and is 12 in the nation in rebounding with 9.17 per game. Tyler Palmer is tops in the Frontier and third in the nation in free throw percentage hitting 92.2% of his free throws. Derek Hibbert leads the league and is second in the nation in assists with seven a game. The Bulldogs lead the conference and are ninth in the nation in scoring with 88 points a game.

Blixt leads the Orediggers in scoring and is second in the conference and seventh in the nation with 21.7 points a game. Montana Tech averages 71.7 points a game while giving up 70.7.

The Bulldogs return home on January 21 and 22 to host Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College.

Luedtke Name Frontier Conference Player of the Week

Matt Luedtke, a 6'0" senior guard from Ronan, was named Frontier Conference Player of the Week. In the Bulldogs two conference wins over MSU-Northern and the University of Great Falls, Luedtke scored 70 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, had four assists, two blocks and three assists. Against Northern, he scored two three point baskets in the final minute of regulation that tied the game and sent it into overtime.

Bulldogs Roll Over UGF

Three Bulldogs scored in double figures led by Matt Luedtke's 29 points on the way to their second straight Frontier Conference victory as they rolled over the University of Great Falls 99-70.

Western raced out to a 60-31 half-time lead and coasted the rest of the way. Also scoring in double figures were Bo Segeberg with 26 and Tyler Palmer with 17.

The Bulldogs hit 13 three point baskets and were 32 of 35 from the free throw line. Western was also dominate on the boards as they outrebounded the UGF 50-35. Seberg and Brandon Day each pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in league play and 13-5 overall. They return to action on Friday when they travel to Butte for a Frontier Conference game against Montana Tech.

Bulldogs Win Conference Opener in Overtime

Western outscored MSU-Northern 18-9 in the overtime period on the way to an 89-80 Frontier Conference win Friday night in Havre. The Bulldogs are now 1-0 in league play and 12-5 overall. Northern falls to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Bulldogs trailed the entire game in regulation time. Senior Matt Luedtke hit two three point field goals in the game's finals seconds of regulation play to send the game into overtime. Northern had a chance to win the game with no time remaining. After Luedtke's shot that tied the game, the Lights' Jordan Mathews was fouled as time ran out. He missed two free throws and the game went into overtime.

Luedtke scored a season high 41 points to lead all scorers. Also scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs were Bo Segeberg with 22 and Jeff Graham with 10

The Bulldogs travel to Great Falls to face the Argos on Saturday.

Bulldogs Open Frontier Conference Play on the Road

The Bulldogs basketball open Frontier Conference play with a pair of games on the road. The Bulldogs face the MSU-Northern Lights on Friday, January 7 followed by a game at the University of Great Falls on Saturday, January 8. Tip-off for both games is 8:00 p.m. Both games will broadcast on KDBM Radio, 1490 on the AM Dial.

The Bulldogs are 11-5 on the season after dropping a pair of games at the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix last week. Western lost to Northwestern Oklahoma 84-69 and to Concordia of Nebraska 85-68. With the pair of losses the Bulldogs dropped from 8th to 22nd in the latest NAIA, Division I, Top 25.

MSU-Northern is 9-5 on the season after winning three games last weekend. The Lights beat Okanagan University twice, 106-69 and 74-49 and then downed Haskell University 61-55. Jordan Mathews leads the Lights in scoring with 12.4 points per game. Marcus Wilson leads Northern in rebounding with 6.79 rebounds per game. The Lights are averaging 77 points a game and giving up 64 a game, second best in the Frontier.

The University of Great Falls Argos is looking to break a three game losing streak. The Argos lost last weekend to Haskell University 77-75 and to Idaho State 87-48. James Edwards leads Great Falls in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Anthony Owens leads the Argos in rebounding with 6.15 rebounds per game.

"We are excited to play a couple of games after our disappointing trip to Phoenix,” said Western coach Mark Durham. “I think we let the national ratings go to our head. We have gone back to the basics this week. We were way too soft in our last two games and we need to make sure we are tougher on the road. Both of these games will be a tough test for us. They are tough places to play and everybody is 0-0 at this point. We need to get our posts involved on offense more and we need to take some pride in our defense."

The Bulldogs lead the Frontier and are 11th in the nation in scoring with 87.4 points per game. Western leads the league and is second in the nation in free throw percentage with an 80.4 average. The Bulldogs also lead the league and the nation in assists with 24.42 per game.

Bulldogs Drop Two in Arizona

The Bulldogs dropped two at the Grand Canyon Classic basketball tournament December 30 and 31 at Phoenix, Arizona.

On Thursday, Western lost to Northwestern Oklahoma 84-69. The game was the good and the bad of Bulldog basketball. The bad came in the first half when the Bulldogs scored only 13 points. The good came in the second half when Western outscored Northwestern 56-44, but the drought in the first half was just too much to overcome.
Matt Luedtke led Western with 39 points, 36 of which came in the second half. Tyler Palmer added 16.

On Friday, Western fell to Concordia University of Nebraska 85-68. The Bulldogs trailed by seven at the half. The game was hard fought with twelve lead changes and it was tied five times.
Luedtke once again led Western as he scored 21 points followed by Bo Segeberg with 15 and Tyler Palmer with 12.

The Bulldogs open Frontier Conference play on Friday, January 7 at MSU-Northern followed by a game at the University of Great Falls on Saturday, January 8.
